In a way Russia is a lot like a more powerful version of Spain or Argentina, albeit with the capability to single handedly bring humanity to the brink of extinction (personally believe we would survive as a species). Argentina keeps sabre rattling over the Falklands to distract from deep domestic issues, and Spain sabre rattle over Gibraltar to distract from domestic issues, but neither would actually act because their arses would be handed to them. It's the same with Russia and nato, there are major domestic issues, but they piss us off to distract from them. There's a reason they went for Ukraine but not, say Lithuania, and did not militarily retaliate when turkey shot down one of their planes (just sabre rattled) and that is that they know they would lose a war with nato even before the Americans arrived.

Admittedly with the second it is a silly thing to go to war over, but regardless the general point stands, they'd have a good first 24-48 hours when they only have to deal with forces already deployed in the east, but as soon as full European force hits they'd be back to Moscow in a week or two with massive civil unrest due to all the wasted lives. It's all bread and circuses
