Does anyone know the chemical test for hydroxide ions?

Add an acid - the test tube will become warm.

OR

Turns damp red litmus paper blue.

I'd add ammonium chloride and warm, then check whether ammonia was given off.

Probably best to check for other sources of hydroxide ions first, though. This means, I suspect, that it'd be a process of elimination.
