Hi
I have drawn the trams isomer of this complex ion but my book gave the bottom one as the answer. Do both diagrams show a pair of optical isomers?
Thanks for the help

Bottom pair only are optical isomers.

The top 'pair' are exactly the same compound.

This type of complex has cis-trans isomers and the cis isomers comprise optical isomers.

Thanks a lot.
So if the three bidentate ligands were the same say [Ni(NH2CH2CH2NH2)3]3+ it would not matter how you draw it but if (as in this example) the complex can show cis trans isomerism it must be the cis form for optical isomerism

Three bidentate can only give a pair of optical isomers - no trans is possible.

Sorry i understand if you have 2 bidentate and then two monodentate does it have to be the cis form to show optical isomerism?
Thanks
