Are these a levels suitable to study advertising/marketing/public relations?

Hey guys!

So I am in year 11 and I am finalising my A Level Choices which are:
- English Literature
- Psychology
- Media Studies
- Religious Education

I did not plan on doing RE but I was told that the only facilitating subject I had was English. There was no way I was doing any of the sciences, maths, history , geography etc so RE was the next best thing. RE isn't facilitating but its very respected and i'm good at it at GCSE level.

Do you think I need RE because I'll probably be dropping it in year 13 anyways?

I want to study marketing/advertising/PR at uni so are those A Levels suitable. Some of the courses and the unis I like are as such:

- Coventry University: Advertising & Marketing
- Lancaster University: Advertising & Marketing
- Birmingham City University: Marketing, Advertising and Public Relations
- Canterbury Christ Church: Public Relations, Media and Marketing

Advice???

Yes, these A-levels seem suitable. Advertising, marketing, and public relations do not really ask for any specific A-levels, so you are fine in that aspect. Psychology can help for obvious reasons and media is also fine as all the three university courses you mentioned deal with the media.

It is true that your only facilitating subject is English Literature. However, do not worry much about that! My only facilitating subject was English Literature too (my other subjects were Psychology, Government and Politics, and Sociology) and now I have an offer from Exeter for one of their most competitive courses. As long as you do well, you will be fine. Besides, the only universities which are particularly picky with facilitating subjects are Oxbridge and RG universities. None of the universities you listed fall into these category, so I doubt your subject choices will be problematic.

As for RE, you have English Literature, so it is up to you whether to take it or not.

Good luck!

Hi,

Im a Public Relations and Communication student at Southampton Solent University! When I did my A-levels I studied business, Law and photography... such a mix I know!

The subjects you are studying sound like a perfect mix for where you want to go degree wise. English will really help you with the writing side of things especially if you choose PR and Media will help with the more creative side of PR as well as advertising & Marketing!

Hope this has helped and good luck in your exams!

Thank you for the good wishes!

I do have a question though. Do you think that marketing/public relations is a waste of a degree? Because I've been told so and told it doesn't pay a lot which bugs me a little.

Please share your insight

Hi - Just saw your other thread and commented on that.

But will reply to your question above on here

Basically, I didn't originally want to come to Uni. I wanted to go straight into a job and start earning money. However, I went to a few open days including one at Solent and looked at the Social Media course, I then spoke to students on the Public Relations & Comms course and decided that one was best for me. I found the content covered really interesting and it seemed like the perfect fit for me. It's very practical as well as covering theory, we work with live clients which make it more applicable to the real world. I find the course so diverse as we cover; PR, Advertising, Marketing, Social Media, Communication and Live Client Briefs.
The last unit that we did in the second year was focused on employability which has helped me find potential employers and my work experience which I am currently on now with REN Skincare!

I don't think you have to worry about doing a PR or creative degree as employers are more respondent to these degrees now as times are moving very quickly and digital is becoming the way of the future! I feel whenever I tell people that I am studying what I'm studying they are usually intrigued because it is different to the usual courses.

Very long reply but I hope it helped, without being bias of my course.. but I do really love it and am so happy I have gone to university in general for the whole experience as well as my course.

Any more questions feel free to ask!

Thank you so much! I have so many questions!

Firstly, the salary! I'm a girl who loves all things fashion, beauty, style, chic, travel etc. I want a job that can support the lifestyle I want and I've been told that going into that sort of career does not pay well at all!! Of course I want to love my job but I do want a decent salary too. What do you think?

Secondly, Southampton Solent and other unis that I have researched that have the courses that I LOVE are not high on rankings and league tables which puts me off going. Can you honestly say that Southampton Solent is A good university? Should I rankings affect my choice ?

Thirdly, employability. When I finish university I do not want to hea employability. When I finish university,I do not want to struggle looking for a job especially because I want to go into the beauty and fashion industry looking for a job especially because I want to go into the beauty and fashion industry. do you think that doing a creative degree like public relations or marketing is going to hinder my employability?

It's funny because you sound exactly like me and all the things I was feeling..!!

I felt the same about salary. However, now finishing my second year I feel the content I have covered and opportunities I have had given to me is priceless. The university itself is very supportive and has many places you can go which support you in employability, all universities are usually very good at this anyway! I have just finished an employability unit which helped me make my own employability blog. I am now on work experience in London at REN Skincare, I got this work experience because the guy I met was very impressed with my degree (despite the uni rankings)

The benefit of taking a creative course is that you follow the current times. So you keep up with software used in businesses (like Indesign), better understanding of social media, get used to working with real life clients, learn how to make a campaign from scratch; whether it be social media, PR, advertising or marketing, improve your presentation/pitching skills, improve writing skills and so much more!! These are some of the things I have learnt in my two years on my course but other creative courses are similar. Just look at what units they cover as that will give you a better indication!

I feel like university rankings do not matter as much now unless you wanted to become something specialised like an Engineer or Doctor. The Public Relations & Comms course at Solent does have 100% student satisfaction for 4 years running now and that's done by students.

With such a current degree I know I will not struggle to find a job, I have already been offered two jobs for when I leave and lots of our third years start looking around Christmas so some already have offers!

You don't have to but I will give you the link to our University PR blog and you can have a read about general PR and also students/previous students thoughts towards the degree and PR.

Really hope this helps, feel free to ask me any questions

Also forgot to mention about salary - Basically, especially on my course, you cover so much content (social media/marketing/advertising/PR etc) you learn so many different skills as well as life skills like pitching/presenting, communication and confidence skills you can walk into a job with these skills and get paid well! Even if you don't want to go directly into PR you can always choose something else!

Me personally, I have already decided that I don't want to go directly into PR, I love the social media side more as well as sales and meeting/talking to people as well as travelling with my job. However I would choose the degree again and again to studyas I feel it has prepared me for the business world and learnt such a variety on the degree that higher ranking universities i feel don't!

Hey again,

Of course, I would love to!

Firstly here's a link on the Solent website about the PR course, it will tell you entry requirements, about the course so what you cover unit wise and lots more about the uni and course!
https://www.solent.ac.uk/courses/undergraduate/public-relations-and-communications-ba

Also, I recommend you book onto an open day so you can see the University itself and understand a bit more as to what's involved on the course
Here's the link: https://www.solent.ac.uk/open-days

Obviously, I love this course and am very bias as I study it, but I do really think it is so great and the variety of units, learning structures, ongoing lecture support and facilities are amazing! Definitely visit other uni open days to get a better idea of everything - they are the best!

I will also say (something that my coursemates and I love) that because our lecture sizes are smaller than other courses at the university the support we get from the lecturers is amazing! If ever I have a problem about work or even something not to do with uni like problems at home etc they are always there to listen which is nice that it is so supportive like that!

So i'm doing a months work experience which you have to do part of your second-year course but the uni help you find it and you put together an employability portfolio for the unit. (My portfolio link is below if you wanted to have a little look)

https://georginabush.wordpress.com

This was part of the unit and we also had to produce other work which wasn't put on the word doc but things that got sent to REN which was confidential.
I am absolutely loving it, just being in London is so nice and I'm learning so much! Have covered social media, press releases, product launches, going to venues and so much more I'm really happy that I got this opportunity as I'm not just filling paper.

Also, will attach the links to our courses social media pages so you can have a little look and follow if you like to keep track of whats going on and open days:
