The WHO would like to inform the nations/ make aware the existence of the
Global Outbreak Alert & Response Network

'The Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN) is a technical collaboration of existing institutions and networks who pool human and technical resources for the rapid identification, confirmation and response to outbreaks of international importance. The Network provides an operational framework to link this expertise and skill to keep the international community constantly alert to the threat of outbreaks and ready to respond.'

'The Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network contributes towards global health security by:

•

combating the international spread of outbreaks

•

ensuring that appropriate technical assistance reaches affected states rapidly

•

contributing to long-term epidemic preparedness and capacity building.'

Liechtenstein is pleased that the WHo representative is drawing attention to GOARN (although it should be "Global Response and Outbreak Alert Network, or "GROAN"), and would like to assure the observer that its recommendations will be fully taken into account in the territory with which I am directly concerned.

The WHO would like to inform the nations on the sudden increase in the number of cases of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

A full fact sheet has been provided to help the nations better defend themselves.
http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs103/en/index.html

Location: The Democratic Republic of Congo, the province of Kasai Occidental.

As of 11 September 2007, WHO is aware of 372 cases and 166 deaths associated with the ongoing event in the province. Additional samples have been taken for further laboratory analysis.

WHO is also working with the INRB, CIRMF, CDC, Atlanta and the Public Health Agency of Canada laboratory in Winnipeg to ensure the MoH is provided with comprehensive laboratory support in the control and investigation of the outbreak.

WHO advises that there is no indication of the need for any restrictions on travel or trade with the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The WHO wishes to inform the UN that the bird flu virus is once again on the rise, as seen by the recent report in Bangladesh indicating a 6 million dollar loss in poultry value due to mass killings that needed to be undertaken.

The Bangladesh representative needs to inform the WHO on how they are dealing with the situation.
