I'm thinking of giving up- should I?

I'm in a difficult situation. I fell very far behind in my first year of GCSEs, and have found it very difficult to catch up...

I recently spent over two weeks (on and off) doing one assignment! My parents are now saying they don't think I have enough time to complete all my coursework and finish my courses!

To be honest, I feel the same way, and am seriously considering giving up! :frown: I want to continue education, because I love it, but at the moment I see no way forward!

At times I feel I'm on the brink of a mental breakdown; I'm so very depressed!

My Mum has been great, and even offered to send me to a Private school for a few terms to help me catch up. I don't think I can take her up on that offer though; it'd cost too much! :s-smilie:

What should I do; should I give up? I’m at a true loss….

I think you know the answer, really. Education is worth a lot and if, as it sounds, you have some extenuating circumstances then colleges and universities will take these into consideration. It DOES get difficult sometimes, for everyone, and no doubt especially for you, but please think how great it'll be when things are back on track and you're doing well. Giving up is the worst thing you could do - and if you do give up, what are you going to do with yourself?

Keep at it. If there is anything related to humanities/english/drama you need help with please feel free to send me a private message.

You should never underestimate the worth of education-I went to a private (well, public to be totally correct...) school, and I really think it was worth it-you should take your mum up on it, try for a bursary.

I had a problem like this at school doing GCSE's, I was struggling, I had no support from the teachers. In the end I just stop trying and did badly at my GCSE's. Thankfully I went to college after which was a huge difference.

How far behind are you?

It's the beginning of the year, do you have assignments very soon?

If so, you just have to power through them. If you have to work every night and day to do them, do it. I know it's easier said than done though.

Don't give up.

But at the same time don't blow a fuse worrying about it all and studying non-stop.
Ask your teachers at school whether you can stay behind after school or something to see if they can give you a hand. If you do that and get it done, you'll at least pass. Maybe concentrate on your most important exams. A GCSE in english, maths and science is still good and is what most employers will primarily look for.
Just chill, do as much of your coursework as you can and try to revise for your exams (or most important ones.)

Edit* Oh didn't realise you were home taught. Well some of what i said still counts

Try SummerHill I heard they revise official GCSE's a month before examination!

How many GCSE's are you studying for? Cos you could maybe drop some?

Your profile says that you are being homeschooled. Is that right?

Would private schooling really give you a better chance than one-to-one tutoring, which I presume is what homeschooling is?

Reply 9

I'd recommend giving the private school thing a shot, try and get some financial aid? The change might really be good for you.

are you planning to study A-levels at home or at college, you could either drop some as people say or take an extra year

Reply 11

I disagree with private schooling if you are being homeschooled - provided that its by a reputable tutor - then it definatly is worth sticking it out with a one-to-one tutor. Going to a private school still means that you're in a class of about 15 people (at best) so even though you have the classroom environment, you'll lose the tutoring - unless you do both?

if it's simply catching up that's a worry, try getting as much help from teachers as possible, and prioritising time to spend on work. I found that getting assignments done for my a levels was as much up to managing my time as anything, and when I feel behind due to issues at home, talking to the teachers to set some objectives, and prioritising work in terms of due dates and workloads helpd me back on track..

Don't give up. You can do it if you really really want to. Don't.give.up.

Sounds a bit like me. When I was doing my GCSEs, I bunked off a lot because I was lazy/unmotivated, didn't value how important they were. When Year 11 started, I realised how stupid I had been and how important it was to do get good grades (especially considering how capable I am, I was in yellis band A). I got about 2 passes in my mocks, and my results were terrible; 2 U's , and some F's. Worked my arse off for the rest of the year trying to make up for it, ended up with 4.5 passes, and the rest were D's. It was a huge improvement, now I'm at college doing A2, I've re-taken maths and passed it, and I'm hopefully off to uni next year. Just keep at it, see what you get, you might surprise yourself. But make sure you work for it.

Thank you for the replies! I feel a bit better now. I do value my Education a lot, and in reality, I would hate to give it up!

The thing that makes me feel really sad is the fact that I get really good grades (almost all A*s)! I'm worried that I might not be able to do as well as I originally hoped, because of a combination of illness, and lack of motivation last year!

I'm really ill at the moment (hence why I'm home schooled), so am really struggling with my work! To put into context how far behind I am, these are the lessons that I've completed in my study pack:

15/20 Sociology lessons
9/15 English Language
12/24 Literature
12/24 History
15/30 Maths

As you can see, I'm only taking six subjects; so there's less to catch up on than someone that is taking nine or ten! I'm still worried though- the thought of getting anything below an A freaks me out!

if you take the easy option now and give up, you will SERIOUSLY regret it in afew years wen you end up working at McDonalds for the rest of your life! push through it, do your A-levels and get yourself to a good uni!
