Moving home to commute?

Basically I live about 10 minutes away from University (in the car) 30 mins (on train) and 50 mins (on bus), although I insisted in moving into halls for the social side.

I've been out every night so far (for 2 weeks, excluding the weekend where i was at home) and its great.

However, during the day its boring, all my flatmates are at uni when im off, and i'm at uni when they're off.

In the flat I have my bedroom, tv, and then the kitchen. It gets boring really quickly as you can imagine, however at night i love it.

I can't stand the days being alone in the flat though, although i spent yesterday in the pub with course mates.

Basically I'm thinking of moving back home to commute to University everyday.

I'd rather sit at home with free internet/500 channels and the run of a house for free, rather than pay £4000 to sit alone in a flat during the day.

The only thing keeping me is the night life and the 5 minute stumble from the clubs into my flat but I'm just thinking is it worth it for such boring days?

I know its the same for everyone but they have to tolerate it as its there first choice university away from home (For most people), I don't have to tolerate it if i chose cos I can easily commute.

Other factors I'm considering is..
My boss says I can work in the week on days off (most wednesdays/fridays) if I want to (If I don't have much uni work)

I'd also save £4000 on rent which I could use on what I please

I could happily commute in the mroning, spend breaks from uni with coursemates in the pub, commute home, and do work at home in the evening rather than pay £4000 for the pleasure.

But I wouldn't be able to go out every night as the taxi fare would be too much and I don't want the social side to suffer, although I could probably cope with going out once a week or something

Basically I need to make a decision soon, and I'm struggling, I've spoken to coursemates, best mates, family, other mates, I dunno, I'm just looking for other opinions I suppose..

Sorry for the extremely long post! lol

I would think if you moved out the gap between you and your flatmates would widen. You would literally never be there then would you. They may invite you out for nights out sometimes but not really the same is it.

I'd stay and try to widen my social circle if i were you.

I know I would probably not see my flatmates again If I moved out, but I've only been out twice with them so far anyway.

I have a friend who commutes from the next village, and know another guy who commutes too, so taxi fare could be split.

A close mate also lives in another halls who said I could crash at his if I did decide to move home

Remember if you dont live in halls you'll be saving a lot of money - which you could spend on occaisonal taxi fares. Also, perhaps spend it on a car so that, if you dont mind not drinking sometimes, you could drive in to uni.

I already have a car which is just sat outside my house at the moment, so I wouldn't need to pay out for that, which is good.

I would have about £3000 in student loan which I could have which like you say could pay for taxis if i decide to go out

Just don't want to miss too much of the social side, but like I said when i start getting a bigger workload I wouldnt moind working some evenings and going out once a week or soemthing aslong as I wasn't totally excluded from the social side.

Do you not have Uni work to do during the day? Like essays, reading, etc?

The OP did say that he could do work at home in the evenings and socialise during the day.

It might also be worth staying good friends with the people in your hall so that, if you do ever want to stay over after a night out, theres a floor to kip on.

Not yet, but I will do

But my point is that surely I can do that at home for free... Instead of paying £4000 to do it in my flat

What I don't want to do is move home and go from being out every night to being at home every night, but I'd be willing to go out and pay for the taxi (though I couldn't afford to do this more than probably 1 or 2 times a week)

You'll soon have plenty of work to fill your days with! Also you don't have to spend all day sat in your room, go explore, go to a museum or just go for a walk or something.

Thats exactly my point though!

Pay £4000 to sit in my flat doing work during the day

OR

Pay £0 and do my work at home

During the day when theres no one about and im int he flat doing work by myself, I might aswell be at home for free doing it.

I'm 10 minutes away from the city, I know it so don't need to explore, and I'm not really a museum person  but how often can you goto museums or walks when ur there for a year before it gets repetative and boring? lol

The only reason I'm in halls is for the 5 minute stumble out of clubs into my bed at 3am.

I could just get a taxi home but it would be about £15 each fare...

Even some nights out of lectures and in a pub/bar and catch the last train home at 11pm or something and then 1 night a week out til 2am or osmething to keep up the social side

I can't stand the days in the flat when its empty and boring, even if working I could do that at home for free

Need a decision to make though pretty sharpish lol

No point staying at halls. £4000 is a lot of money. From your post you seem to realise this but you still want to stay in halls, its quite confusing. You seem like an outgoing person, if you feel you won't lose your friends anyway then just commute.

Well you must enjoy living in halls but it sounds like you've already made your mind up!

lol I'm in the same position, i think i'm gunna sort it out tomorow.
Why dont you spend some of that cash, pass your driving test and buy a cheap-ish car? You could be at uni however late you like, or at home at your convenience. 10 minutes drive is nothing!
Obviously if you're going out getting drunk, dont drive, but for general use, buy a car! You get the best of both worlds if you ask me.

I know I sound like I've already made my mind up the way I tend to lean to going home but can't make the final decision

Like I've said I already have a car which is just sitting outside my house soo i wouldnt need to spend loan on lessons or stuff.

I know £4000 is a lot of money, especially when i live so close.... this is a big factor, also the fact theres never anyone in my flat during the day

the only reason im staying is to go out evry night lol which isnt feasible for a few reasons from home, though a taxi here n there would allow me to do so once or twice a week

Need to make a decision befoe friday though

anymore opinions guys?
Reply 16
I would go home and you could always stay with friends on nights out.
Reply 17
hey why by friday anyway?

Rent to be paid?
Reply 19
Want to decide by friday mainly because people from clearings/exchanges are moving now sdo thats my best bet of finding someone.
and theres also going to be a rush likely over this weekend/'early next week so i want to get on there before the rush if i decide to move out

Went out last night again had an amazing time and thats something i wont be able to do everynight which is the only reason im here! lol.
Suppose ive got to decide whether going out once a week is going to be good enough for me or not
