Anyone? :frown:

I've put Grey down now.
Hello! I'm from Grey, must have missed your thread before. What would you like to know?

I went to Grey for a summer school thing, and I hated it - its location and everything. I think the colour of the brick did it for me though!

I was put to Grey after not getting into Castle for my Law application this year, am applying for PPE this year and am yet undecided about college - but it won't be Grey hmmm

lol lots of bad things being said about Grey but don't worry - I have some great friends who went to Grey and they loved the place!

It has an amazing view of the Cathedral from their central green area, decent buildings and good accomodation. I can't say too much about it because I don't go there, but from what others have said to me, they loved the place!

It seemed like their heart was in the right place and people would have a good time there - a bunch to do etc, I would just prefer something a little more traditional personally..

I hear there is a gym there?
Can anyone expand on that? Quality etc...?

There is indeed a gym: it's very small indeed, but the equipment's not bad- everything got upgraded this year so it's mostly very new, and there's a good range of stuff; free weights and machines, cardio, and some resistance machines too, and the basic bench and mat type things.

Yeah, see I didn't like the idea of a college like Castle, because I don't think things being TOO traditional and formal would be good for me, I'm quite laid back.

It's....erm....grey? I don't see anything wrong with the colour of the brick, it's nothing weird, because I'm sure it's either grey or red, so no weird luminous green buildings or anything like that (though that would be cool!)

Well if by nightlife you mean the bar, then that's pretty nice, not usually very crowded, but quite cosy and always a few people in there. Other nightlife is the same as the rest of Durham!

The accommodation is quite varied between the blocks- the nicest rooms are in Holgate, which are en-suite and have ginormous desks, but the only freshers in there are sharing. I was in Hollingside for my entire first year, which was very nice. Most first years, however, are in Elvet or Oswald- these tend to be less modern (and rather lacking in storage in Oswald, which some of my friends found an issue) but still perfectly comfortable, and I will recommend the showers everywhere, the water pressure is fabulous.

The atmosphere in Grey is absolutely college's best attribute. There's a really strong community spirit, livers-in and livers-out alike, and I've had friends from other colleges remark on how much interaction there is between the year groups, particularly freshers and finalists living-in. We have loads of societies and sports teams, including a really good theatre company (which puts on regular productions), the reigning Ultimate Frisbee champions, a football 'D' team (!!), a literary society (run by my three housemates) and loads more. It's really easy to get involved in whatever interests you. Plus we run lots of cool events like the various bops throughout the year, a Christmas party for disadvantaged children, the best fireworks event in the North East (apparently), the newly-instituted Bar Fest (beer, barbecues, and general fun), and of course Grey Day, the mightiest college day of them all!

So yes. Grey is awesome. And the bricks are a sort of yellowy colour- we're named after Earl Grey (as in the man with the tea, who also helped to found the university), not the colour!
It has a good bar too, with some decent real ales when I've been in there.

....and does not smell funny like one TSR member mentioned to me tonight.:p:

Gym? - Cuth's has two, though I wouldn't know about the quality or if they work (several machines are new this year I just havn't used them).

Nightlife? Cuth's is known for having the bar everyone in the uni comes too. In fact, we have two bars now, so great places to start the night. Then after the bar I'm sure you'll find people in Cuth's ready to go out all night. On Monday our college students get into Klute free.

And I'm sorry, I know this is a thread about Grey, but those two points were asked about and Han might be interested in knowing about a college that probably ranks top based on them.

Everyone in the Uni goes to your bar yes, but that's between the hours of midday and 7pm - because there is no other college bar open then  In the evening, it will get just as many customers from other colleges as every other college does.

The only reason it seems busier than others is that Cuths is the biggest college and so your (relatively small) bar gets absolutely crammed to the point of being quite scary (if you're claustrophobic especially!). You have to wait for aaaaaaaages to be served and then spill your drinks everywhere because of the crowds. Then you can't sit anywhere

You get into Klute for free? Well, the less said about that the better because you generally would have to pay me to go to Klute :p:

Oh yeah, and it's funny that whenever you do get a student at Durham saying "I would have preferred to be in a different college" they're at Cuths. Funny that isn't it? Hehe

Butler has the best bar :p:. We have hamocks!
