I hope I'm not offending anyone but I'm considering Royal Holloway as one of my chocies, but everything I've heard about Egham has been pretty negative. What do you guys and Royal Holloway think of Egham and do you have to go into it often?

yeahh im in pretty much the same situation.

maybe i'm not the one who should answer this question (been here for just two weeks) but from what i've experienced i'd say you shouldn't be too worried about egham..as you probably know it's a small town, so it's irrealistic to expect lots of pubs, clubs, shops but you can surely find the bsic things you could need...the people i've talked to so far have been kind (maybe not exceptionally friendly, but surely not rude as i read somewhere)...the place has its disadvantages, but if you manage to save money (and from what i've seen is not impossible), then going to london over the weekends could make up for the poor social life in egham...as a whole i like this university,i like the campus,i like the friends i've known since the first day here (never thought i could bond with someone in such a short time!) and during the week i don't really care if out there there are just the happy man,the monkeys forehead and a few other pubs!!!

Actually you can expect loads of pubs...I can think of at least 12 - http://www.beerintheevening.com/ says there is an extra 4 I didn't think of that are in the Egham and Englefield green area.

I admit a few of them aren't within easy walking distance, but that's soon sorted by getting a teetotal friend with a car
Based on my two weeks here, I would say that Egham is fine for getting the weekly shop, the Tesco is of a good size, but other than that there's nothing there but banks. There's lots of pubs in the area though, and a few bits and pieces on campus. If you want nightlife it's best to go to London, or join NADS I suppose, and if you want to go shopping, Staines or Windsor is the best bet.
there are clubs in winsor and staines, and a night bus bk from london to heathrow, taxis £30 from heathrow, £10-15 ish from staines and winsor at night, maybe a bit more, but still not a lot if ur sharing.
egham is tiny but its near loads of ther places, and the drinking societies puts lifts onto clubs nearer london
If you enjoy going out a lot DO NOT COME HERE! There are far better places. The uni is pretty and there have been a fair few parties but sometimes it's nice to have pubs/clubs/restaurants at your doorstep, so you can pick and choose as you like and that just doesn't happen here. Also everything takes AGES - like registration, they are just so unorganised and anal. Also everything costs loads.

There have been some nice times where I've sat down and relaxed and enjoyed the old buildings but to be honest there should be better things here! Sussex was a much better place...I miss Brighton.

Me too, so cosy and easy.
I've heard from a couple about the 'social life' being rather poor at RHUL.

Now, having been to an open day, checked out many of the schools facilities, and spoken to some of the teachers, its ideal.
The appearance of the university is fantastic, and if the teaching quality is anything like as good, i#ll be content.

You are the one who decides what kind of social life you have. You have to make a conscious effort to go out, join clubs and societies, hang out with people in halls etc. It CAN be tough at first, but after 2 or 3 months you get to know enough people to build a solid group. I would say my social life at RHUL is pretty sound, but only because I have made an effort to get to know people and spend time with people. There are people who like to just hang out in their room, which if they like it is fine, but if you want to know people, you have to get out there.

I'd say RHUL is a community. I did also make some friends from working at Tesco too, and from going pubs off campus rather than always going to the ones on campus.
i went on an open day to rhul and also stayed in egham for one night. the reason why i refused to apply there was that egham is quite dull and many students seem to leave at the weekends for london so its even emptier..i chose to apply to Cass LSE and kings instead

Well it's up to you...I have no idea about the quality of teaching of English Lit at either unis but I have friends who studied English at Sussex and really enjoyed it. Have you visited both campuses? Royal Holloway has Founders - which is stunning but the campus in general I don't think is that well set out. I prefer all the green spaces between lecture theatres at Sussex, where you can laze about, read, play frisbee etc. I love the campus and Sussex, it's beautiful - such nice sunsets!

It just seems at Royal Holloway everything is more of an effort...You have to organise going out; for parties or shopping trips or clubbing (unless you go to the SU, which isn't too bad but still expensive - £5 to get in!! They're also really anal in there and you can get banned quite easily, which is your social life down the drain really). It annoys me, I'm used to having lots of parties to choose from every night, or lots of clubs that are much cheaper and much better than the SU at RoHo. It's not like I'm a complete party animal, it's just that if I've been busy with work and then decide I want to go out I can't really do it here...All I can do is go to a pub, which shut early on campus (the amount of times I've been told to get out at closing time, very unpolitely, is crazy - very depressing). It's nice to have something going on all the time (that's cheap!) so that when you want to go out you can - this doesn't happen at RoHo but does at Sussex.

One last point to make is Sussex is full of hippies and generally laid back students and is quite left-wing. RoHo is full of rich, boarding school students who are very posh and don't seem to mind the high prices and is very right-wing. I have met crazy weirdos from both uni's and also very cool people so it's not really that important, you'll make good friends regardless. I just found the environment at Sussex a lot nicer to study in - it was more embracing regardless of your background and views. I've found that RoHo has some cliques and generally people are more stuck up and judgemental.
