Egham isn't amazing, but I don't think anyone really complains. It's got what you need food & shops-wise, but the social life is negligible. Staines is a 5 minute train ride away. I wouldn't let Egham affect your decision - RHUL is very much a campus university - if you want a city university look elsewhere!

One last point to make is Sussex is full of hippies and generally laid back students and is quite left-wing. RoHo is full of rich, boarding school students who are very posh and don't seem to mind the high prices and is very right-wing. I have met crazy weirdos from both uni's and also very cool people so it's not really that important, you'll make good friends regardless. I just found the environment at Sussex a lot nicer to study in - it was more embracing regardless of your background and views. I've found that RoHo has some cliques and generally people are more stuck up and judgemental.

I think you're being unnecessarily harsh on Royal Holloway, and what you say about RH students is a gross stereotype. I made friends from many different walks of life, and I loved the environment - a lovely green campus, good architecture (generally speaking) and of course the stunning Founder's Building - and the atmosphere. No wonder I really miss the place and feel nostalgic about my time at university.

I was at Reading in my first year, and knew far more posh people there than I did at Royal Holloway (though that might have been because of the Hall I was in). In terms of nightlife, obviously Reading had many more clubs than the Egham area does, but I still managed to have a perfectly satisfactory social life at RH - there was plenty going on, and in any case it's the people you're with who make an evening fun, regardless of whether you're just sitting in a communal kitchen, in a pub or clubbing!

And they knocked down the really ugly hall and replaced it with some modern ones. And there's the new lecture/tutorial building and the expansion of the management building.

It's my opinion, I don't think I'm being harsh at all...I don't think what I've said is a stereotype - I've made opinions from my observations, not anyone elses. The amount of times I've heard comments along the lines of - I went to a really expensive boarding school, my parents are loaded - is rediculous! You must have noticed that there are a number of people on campus that are like this!??

If I hadn't already been to university, matured and gained confidence I would feel extremely put off by a lot of people here (coming from a council house and having the government pay for my education and not having my parents to rely on for money). I don't think your financial background should be an issue at uni but for some people here it is...Not everybody though. If you had read the rest of my comment properly I went on to say that the uni has lots of cool people; I wasn't 'stereotyping' the whole RH student population.

Please remember my comments are with respect to Sussex Uni (as the girl who asked the question originally is trying to decide between RoHo and Sussex). So yes I do think that some people at RoHo are more stuck up and judgemental than people at Sussex, but I think it would be hard to find a uni that was less stuck up and judgemental than Sussex. I think it is partially a result of Brighton being so welcoming to all kinds of people

Yes the campus is pretty, but I still think that it isn't laid out as well as it could be. As for atmosphere - I think it is rather cold, but I think this is a result of the way the campus is laid out. I can't make a proper judgement though until it is summer, when people will hang around outside more. Still I doubt the atmosphere will match that of Sussex's...The only positive thing that RoHo has over Sussex (in my opinion) is the Founder's building - it is so nice to read a book in the quads and have a few drinks there, I find this particularly nice because I'm a big fan of old architecture. But this alone cannot make RoHo even come close to the Sussex experience.

Well, all I can say is that I'm sorry you're not having the same experience of Royal Holloway as I did. I had the time of my life, disregarding my essay crises of course! Though I wouldn't describe RH as 'hippyish', I didn't find the atmosphere cold or the people stuck-up and judgemental either.

Um, there's lots of patches of green on roho's campus..next to the mccrae buildings, next to the arts building, next to founder's on both sides, inside founder's, the fields below founder's... quite a few places really!!
I've never found the atmosphere to be cold, and I think the campus is great. I have only come across a few stuck-up, annoying posh types and then I just ignored them.
Well I'm glad you guys didn't find it to be cold, I know I have and quite a few people I know have but I say bring on the summer - I think it'll be a lot better then.

I think its different though, I know its winter, but on my way to and from things I don't feel like there is really a chance I'll just sit down anywhere, it is more like the patches of grass are seperate, when in sussex its more parky everywhere, but without really nice places like Founder's and its Quads
I wish so many people did not go home at the weekends, Founder's is so dead..

^ tis true about people going home. Not much you can do about that I guess! It's different when you have your own house in the second year though I think.

It's a shame that unis get compared so much. Each uni has their own character, with things that will be good, and other things that won't be as good.

I havn't read through all the replies here so sorry if I repeat any points! I'm in my second year at RH and just thought I'd share my views on Egham. The Uni itself is very good, the bars are pretty good and the Union is alright although a little expensive and repetitive if you go all the time. Egham itself has a number of pubs, the best of which are The Happy Man and The Monkey's Forehead (this one in particular is very much a student pub). The high street is fairly small but has banks, a woolworths, boots, subway etc and a few pubs and restaurants. There are all the essentials, including Tesco which, although a metro, is quite large.

Staines is nearby and has more high street stores and a very large cinema. Feltham is a little further afield but there is a cinema and bowling etc there. Windsor is the other large place nearby, with a range of things to do. In terms of clubbing, Liquid in Windsor is very good as is Oceana in Kingston, also a day travelcard to London is less than a tenner and there's plenty to do there, and many good clubs and bars.

So there is stuff to do, whatever you're in to, whilst the Uni itself has a great atmosphere.

Hope this is helpful for anyone applying!

The SU does seem to be going out of its way to ruin union nights, it only costs an extra two quid to get into liquid in windsor on a friday than it does for the SU nights. Having said that, Egham suits me fine especially now I'm in third year and having to do lots of work
The campus is absolutely drool worthy...one of the reasons I'm trying to get in. Oh and it's reputation, of course.

I'm my year abroad and have to say I miss RHUL, the union and having a campus uni. Even though everyone moans about the union, the fact is it's a comfortable place to go, especially if you want to meet up with other RHUL'ers. Now that I haven't been back to RHUL since September, and having spent time at a uni without a campus, I've realised how having a campus makes every so easy with regards to lectures, meeting up with friends, etc.

I think with most students it's a love-hate thing, meaning love to hate it the union etc.
