drongo, thanks so much for these lists!

can i be annoying and ask for "maths & spanish" unis please??

No such category I'm afraid. Courses would be listed under both individual categories (usually). I've done Maths, which unis in that list do the course? I'll check the code if you tell me what code/codes and which of those unis you are interested in.

OK, so I'll give you all of them since there aren't too many but if there were loads it would really help if you requestees narrowed down which institutions are of interest...

U Aberdeen
U Aberystwyth
Aston U
U Chester
U Greenwich
Lancaster U
U Stirling
U Swansea

Reply 183

oh really, that's it? wasn't expecting much, but maybe a few more than that...

the ones i was looking for were aston (on the list), st andrews (which NEVER has clearing anyway lol), manchester, exeter, southampton, sheffield, ucl (again, not likely to have any places)

thanks for that:smile:

Reply 184

what does U mean? the grade?

Reply 185

I wondered that at first. It just means University.

Reply 186

i dont get what that means can anyine tell me?

Reply 187

Like University Aberswyth or Greenwich University. They just put the letter instead of the word.

Anyway, do you think that, if a course went into clearing last year that it'd be pretty easy to get in this year?

Correct re uni. I'd be typing out 'university' to mental distraction! And I was doing it to avoid confusion (LOL) as sometimes there are Colleges which share the other bit of the name eg Bristol, Swansea, Greenwich.

I wouldn't count on entry being easier/easy. As applicants can only choose 5 places this year (it was 6 before) it may make the offer/uptake ratio for the unis more complicated to get right.

It does seem that if you just miss your firm offer then a place having space on results day may well be accomodating rather than looking for a clearing applicant.

Having loads of spaces last year might have meant the course requirements were dropped for this year but that should be reflected in the prospectus. The trend however is for ever higher entry requirements as evidenced on TSR.

could you possibly do a list for modern languages please? preferably combinations with german, like german and spanish or similar

Already did aero engineering. Have a look at the unis and ask for codes of those you're interested in.

Adding Aerospace gives:

U Bath
Brunel U
Coventry U
Doncaster Coll
U Glamorgan
U Glasgow
Imperial Coll
U Liverpool
NE Wales Unst HE
U Nottingham
Stockport Coll
U Surrey

WOW . you sure about that one?

OK, the following is not meant as a criticism of you Papillon. I'm just using this request to highlight the way the newspaper advertises the clearing places.

Papillon's request is not as easy as it sounds. In the 110 pages of newspaper there are subject categories, under each one is a list of institutions with all the course codes for each place. The universities seem to choose under which category they will advertise their spaces. In the case of languages the categories are "Languages" , "Modern Languages" , "Spanish" , "French" etc. The problem is a uni may advertise each course in all of them, in one or in a random number. The one thing that doesn't happen is a neat list of just eg German and Spanish courses. And there isn't only one code for such a course so I'd have to cross check all the codes of interest (once I'd looked them up on UCAS)against pages and pages of close typed codes.

This is not just a problem with Languages. All joint, 'with', particularly specialised and unusual courses (ie not straight Law, Phil, Economics etc )are categorised equally randomly. This is why I'm asking Requestees to ask for subjects/courses (with codes) at specific institutions, please.

I started giving long lists at the beginning of this thread so that people realised that there was a lot to be found in Clearing. If you look at the lists the same places come up again and again. If you need info about the ones that don't (or specific reassurance about the ones that do!) then please ask me only about those named places with your best guess at category along with a code if possible.

Of course this is not my thread and the requests are not actually addressed to me, so it's probably not my place to say how they should be worded...
