i have really bad cramps in my calves... :(

recently i keep waking up in the middle of the night with such strong pains in my calf muscles that i really cannot move them. it is amazingly painful!
this past week it has happened 3 nights and now it just hurts [but not so bad] all day. it just aches especially when i move.
i have had these cramps on a minimal scale maybe once every 3 months for a year or so, but never this bad or this constant.
my stepdad says to massage my calves before i go to bed, and he has told me to do a few exercises to stretch them [he used to play a load of football so used to get cramps a lot then].
firstly is there any other way to ged rid of them?
and secondly why do you get cramps?
i have lost some weight recently and am eating a lot less, but i dont think that this should cause cramps  and also i have injections every week which i now have every month, so could it be sort of that i have got used to the medication?? and am having sort of withdrawel symptons??
thank you to any help!!
and i will go to my doctor if it continues but as i live in spain, this next week is fiesta week so everything is closed, and i dont think it is serious enough for hospital.

just make sure you exercise them enough, make sure they have had a good supply of blood to the muscle is all i can say.

Lack or salt is often the reason behind cramp.

Are you doing any exercise and not warming up/cooling down properly? That could also cause it.

That would be my guess. If the problem continues though, it might be worth asking a doctor or physio for advice.
