What to write for software engineering/development application (APPRENTICESHIP)

Hi everyone,

I am a 6th form leaver who is applying for software engineering apprenticeships. I did ICT, Media and Sociology at A-levels and really want some hands-on practical experience in the workplace in a programming/software development role.

I have some experience in programming during a course and also build upon these skills at home.

I am willing to apply to a number of apprenticeships in this area but I do not know how to start off an application under 'Why do you want to do this apprenticeship?'/supporting information statement.

I have just recently got into this career path so I don't have heaps and heaps of experience. I do have a strong passion for it however and would like to see myself developing code for video games in the future.

I would appreciate it if somebody could help me and give me some advice on how to write a supporting statement for a software engineering application.

THANK-YOU

What are your career goals? It is always good to state what your career goals are and how it fits into the apprenticeship position you are applying for, when explaining your reason as to why you want to do the apprenticeship, as this would imply to the employer that you're already knowledgeable on what you want as a career and you know what to do in order to achieve this goal.

If for instance, your career goal is to become a Software Engineer, you could say something like "I aspire to become a successful Software Engineer and this apprenticeship would allow me to enhance my current technical skills to a high standard. The apprenticeship will give me a strong practical grounding in the workplace which will help me start up my career in computing".

I would also recommend doing some research on the companies which you apply to as this would illustrate to the employer that you really want to do the apprenticeship at their company, for example, you could say "I applied to this apprenticeship because *employer* is a reputable company known by many and I would be proud to work for a company that has achieved so much in their time", it would be great to also mention some positive achievements the company you are applying for has done, you could say "I applied to this apprenticeship because of how successful the company is overall. In 2015 *employer* had a net revenue of £££billion which is higher than most of their competitors".

The statement doesn't have to incredibly long, I would include just 4 main reasons as to why you want to apply for this apprenticeship.

I really appreciate all the help you have supplied. I will jot everyone's advice down onto a document - it will help me come with up the first draft of my application.

I do have some kind of idea about what I can use the software engineering qualification for --> games development or A.I for hospitals/science. I guess I need to research a little bit more into these paths to show that I know what I am talking about.

Cheers!

And wow - so you were in the same position as me? If you don't mind answering this, how is it working with a reputable IT company? Was it everything you expected?

Well I was only in the same position as you a few months ago  I'm still in sixth form, but I managed to secure a place at a top global company, I didn't think I would because my practical experience & academics are fairly poor but I do have a strong interest in IT which I think substantially helped me in the application process, hopefully it is everything I expected it to be as I'm sacrificing my uni place at a top 20 university for this apprenticeship

Best of luck for your applications!

Oh wow - well done! I hope it all works out and I am sure that you will get it.
Funny you saying that, I just left 6th form and went to a university part of the top 20 - hated it and the course itself was not right for me so I withdrew and that's why I am here trying to get as much advice about apprenticeships in software engineering as possible so I can finally make a career move and do something with my life.

Thank-you - you too! And if you have any questions regarding revision and 6th form in general then I will be happy to help. I did Media, Sociology and ICT.
