loads.....
inhaled a foreign body, pneumonia, abscess, TB, COPD, fungal infection, pulmonary embolism (blood clot), heart failure, aneurysm, heart valve problems, stomach ulcers, along with about 6000 other very unpleasant reasons

basically, these are all very unlikely, however you should jus go get checked out.....

EDIT: hah, i'm quite impressed with my head......

I don't want to alarm you but is there any signs she's suffering from an eating disorder? If she is then her thinking she has a tear in her throat may actually be real. If so, she needs urgent medical attention.

well i suppose she doesnt each that much, shes pretty messed up at the moment but i dont think she has an eating disorder.
Stomach infection, lung infection.

I think the tear in the throat probably is the safe bet though.

Still, the doctor will have more say in the matter.

Most people with eating disorders go to great lengths to hide them from the people closest to them, so if she is going through a period of emotional instability and you've noticed a change in her eating habits it could be a possibility.

In any case, a delay in getting her to a doctor could be fatal if she has a tear in her throt, so I can't overestimate the importance of getting her seen by someone.

what actually is it when you get a tear in your throat?
Doctors! -->

apart from tuberculosis.
because my friend is coughing up blood and she said its because theres a cut in her throat but i think thats really unlikely.
shes going to go to a doctor tomorrow but i just wondered if theres any other reasons?

Most likely is that she has a bit of a cold or tonsilitus. Cause you to cough alot, the back of the throat gets irritated and your get small bleeds. So what you cough up has some little blood streaks in it.
The other key one would be a little bit of a chest infection - same effect.

But I'm always dubious of these sorts of cases. Firstly because some people say coughing up when they mean vomiting (and vice versa), and secondly because peoples definition of bringing up blood can be wildly different.
smoking too much?
is she literally coughing up blood or just tasting it. I know I can taste blood when I've just been coughing, or doing X-country or something. I don't think that's unusual, but if it's proper coughing up blood, then there's defo something wrong. See what the dr says.

If she has recently been losing wight then maybe Bulimea (sp?).

also, is she coughing up pure large amounts of blood, or bloody phloem etc?
I know this thread is really old but I was searching google about the topic and this thread came up.

Just 5 minutes ago a coughed up a little bit of blood, it wern't much, if I wasn't looking into the sink when I was coughing I wouldn't have noticed the red patch.
I've had a cold and a really bad cough for the last 10 days, should I be worried or is it probably nothing?

your constant coughing has probably caused a bit of a tear somewhere in your throat or windpipe. It'll probably just heal itself.

If it carries on long term (ie 2-3 weeks), or you start coughing up loads of blood, or start feeling especially unwell, go to the hospital.
