Just one experience, but my daughter had terrible acne between 13 and 16. She went through a series of treatments prescribed by the GP, including several antibiotics and the pill, with little or no effect.
Eventually, she was referred to a dermatologist and put onto roaccutane. Although this sounded quite scary, she was desperate. Nothing seemed to happen for a couple of months except her eyes got very dry and her lips peeled horribly, but then it started to work. After about 8 months, she had just the odd new spot and now, 4 years after the treatment, she has very good skin, with just a couple of old scars.
Although it was roaccutane that solved the problem, equally important all the way through this time was making sure that she kept doing stuff, especially things that kept her self-esteem high, and surrounded herself with friends who were supportive and decent. Acne is brutal, but ultimately, it's just a skin condition. Go you!
