Small diameter of capillaries in the lungs
I've been given this question to complete for my homework:
"Explain two ways in which the small diameter of the capillaries results in the efficient transfer of oxygen from the alveoli to the red blood cells?"
Any help would be really appreciated, thanks in advance.

well the small lumen may allow them to maintain a high pressure for the transfer of oxygen and blood from capilaries to cells of the body...thats one suggestion anyway

Lots of small capillaries give larger surface area for gas exchange than one larger vessel.
