[Chemistry] Question about acid and metal carbonate reactions.

Hello all. I was just wondering, if I react an acid and a metal carbonate together e.g. hydrochloric acid and magnesium carbonate, how would I know if the acid was added in excess without using indicator? Thanks!

The reaction mixture will no longer produce (more) gas upon further addition of acid (all the carbonate ions have reacted)

But suppose I added just the right amount. The same would happen if I carried on adding acid but the mixture initially did not have excess acid.
