Crazy heart thing

Hi there, apologies if this is long but I'm just wondering if anyone else gets this:

When I'm in bed at night, I will be drifting off to sleep and my heart keeps kind of fluttering in my chest. I don't get any pain or anything, but I keep getting a sort of adrenaline rush, like butterflies in my stomach. Also, I kind of feel myself falling into sleep and I will wake myself up and my heart thumps really hard. I's annoying because I can't actually get to sleep. I think I'm going to go see my GP soon, but I'm wondering if anyone else has this? I only get it at night and not even after exercise or anything.

Thanks for your help in advance xx
strange, perhaps palpertations?

I have the exact same thing! Plus sometimes I seem to feel my heart beat in my lower back...very odd. But I'd like to know people's opinions about this, because it is quite scary sometimes (not the heart in lower back thing, but the weird beats at night. For me sometimes it seems like a weird fluttery rhythm like a boom brr brr brr boom, as if the heart has as a stammer).

Yep mine is exactly like that. It just feels horrible! I don't know whether it is something physically wrong, or if it might be like panic attacks or something. It sounds silly but if I go to bed and think "oh no it's gonna happen again," it usually does. So I seem to make it worse. Eventually I fall asleep, but only when Im practically exhausted, so I'm tired all the time! I'm going to try and find my GP this week (just moved to uni) so hopefully will get it sorted.

I think I have that as well. I think it has to do with stress.

Sounds like an ectopic beat (an extra heart beat) to me. It can be quite normal and can happen when you're tired or have had some alcohol. I experience the same thing late at night and it can be very frustrating when you are already tired. The first time it happened I was worried as it was l didn't know what it was and it took me a long time to figure it out. http://www.nhsborders.org.uk/view_item.aspx?item_id=16892 If you're concerned go and see your doctor...

Anxiety mainly. You'll be more aware of normal bodily functions like pulse, breathing etc. when you're anxious.

I have something similar, but there's a good chance that it might be something called Wolfe-Parkinson-White syndrome, where basically I have a sort of second pulse, that means I feel like I'm having palpitations sometimes. Thing is I don't get it that badly, and all the blood tests and ECGs I've had show up negatively, but that's mainly because I never have an "attack" (for want of a better word) when I'm strapped up the the machine. It sort of feels like my heart is beating more than it should, but not necessarily harder, and sometimes like my chest is a little tight, almost like someone pressing on it gently.

If you go to the doctor and say your heart is playing you up they'll definitely look into it - I only mentioned my palpitations in passing and they got me in for loads of tests the same week.
