aptitude test 60%-70% correct

Hey guys..I'm new here

just did the trials in SHL website..got 24/34 (71%) right for verbal and 24/39 (62%) for numerical..It's too bad and I won't get any interviews with such results, right? plus I heard these SHL trials are actually easier than the real ones..

any suggestions? and anywhere I can practice more...gonna sit in an apptitude test in five days..thx a lot!

Have you tried any literature? Waterstones always have a good selection of books on this subject.
Does anyone know whether they use negative marking on these tests...i normally get about 80% through and then run out of time but is it worth just guessing the last few or do u think its better to just leave them blank...???

I would say dedicate 4 to 6 solid hours to it if you want to make a good improvement.

I just did it for kicks: 85% verbal; 49% numerical.

Story of my life, really. Still, not bad for someone that hasn't studied Maths since GCSE.

The word on the street was that the BarCap pass mark was 55%, but I have nothing concrete to back that up, it's just a rumour i heard...

am just wondering if I can submit fake info/application to SHL/BarCap to practice more..I guess the questions are different time to time..

Just finished the BarCap tests and after the numeracy test it said i passed but after the verbal test just said ‘your app is under consideration’.

Do people get an email saying they passed the verbal or just 'you app is under consideration'?

55%? that's really low...no wonder i passed it..haha..just kidding.

actually i think the ones on BarCap are much easier than these on SHL trial..60%-70% correct for SHL trial + no further practice, i went through BarCap's quite smoothly and got a few minutes left for both numerical and verbal..

thanks ketmna - how are you getting on with the rest of your applications, you done many now?

SHL trial tests are much easier then the actual tests, from people I have spoken to pass marks vary from bank to bank but typically you would need to score +18. For example I know of two people at citi group both sat the same test one score 23/35 but only answered 26 of the questions and the other one scored 18/35 but answered all questions. I guess they factor in the time you spend answering questions as well, the test was 35 minutes long so I suppose each department you apply for has different standards, perhaps trading floors would prefer the one who scored 18 as the answered all question and still go over half right compared to the other who got 23 but only answered 26 questions so although they scored higher they answered fewer questions so maybe they would be suited to a slower paced environment. Just my opinion by no means is this gospel truth:smile:

What sort of role do such tests screen for? Not an I.B. one, surely?

These online SHL trial tests don't screen for anything its the banks own aptitude tests that are used in the screening process which are usually developed by companies like SHL. There are many different roles in IB with varying degrees of numeracy required so dependent on which area you apply to the pass requirement may deviate. The roles may range from junior trader, equity research to settlements and confirmations.

You probably could... but your going to have to keep giving fake addresses etc. I know that some IBs only invite you to the test after they have reviewed your inital application, so you may have to keep submitting good answers repeatedly. sounds like a waste of time, there are plenty of good practice sites about.

Does anyone know if the pass mark for the verbal tests is lower than the numeracy tests? I am pretty comfortable with the numeracy stuff and think 70% (14/20) is a fair mark to pass but some of the verbal tests are just so random.
