Non-stop coughing - embarrassing

Isn't it so embarrasing where you have one of those coughs where once you start, it just doesn't stop? The horrible, tickly throat one. I recently caught a horrible cold, and developed some sort of infection in my chest which has been causing LOTS of coughing. It's so embarrassing in lectures and stuff to have major coughing fits when the entire hall is silent and everyone turns around and looks at you

And then you try and hold it in but it makes it even worse. Most of all, I hate people who look at you so disapprovingly as if you're doing it on purpose  I wish I could hold it in but I can't!

Anyway, I realise this is rather trivial but it's sort of bringing me down :s-smilie: even on the Tube, people look at you in a sort of disgusted way cos they think you're spreading germs everywhere when you cough. It's not like I don't cover my mouth :frown: and it's not my fault I still have to travel to attend uni whilst ill :frown:

I had this continualy throughout primary school, high school and college.

I would cough so much that it made me sick. I had to arrange with my teachers that it would be ok for me to just run out of class in the middle of a lesson because I was going to be sick.

I made sure I had a bottle of water with me at all times and that helped sometimes. Apart from that I just had to wait for it to go away.

Sounds like asthma to me :s-smilie:

Yeah, i can relate...and its so sucky that you tend to get those coughing fits at the worst of times.

It doesn't happen to me very often, but whenever it does, i'm usually on a bus and it doesn't go away unless you cough real hard. I've made good use of the noisy bus engine by coughing when the bus is in motion.

Well if it keeps going, seriously consider going to a GP...

I'm one of the people who would get pissed off. Sorry. The sound just bothers me (even when I cough). I just have a thing for sounds...

Anyway, hope you feel better soon!

I always used to get the really throat tickling ones in the middle of exams. Used to feel like i had sawdust or something in my throat and i just could not stop. And of course it would be when everyone else is totally silent!

I understand.... I have a chest infection at the moment and just can't stop coughing. I'm at uni in birmingham but wanted to come home for a few days and I got such dirty looks on the train on the way back.... it does have some benefits though... some creepy looking man sat next to me but because I couldn't stop coughing he went and sat next to some other poor girl!

I went to the doctors today because i've my chest really hurts. It was a virus so they couldnt do anything. But i was told to go and buy some pholcodine to help with my cough. I've only started taking it today and its working well. You can buy it over the counter so you dont need a prescription or anything.
Maybe go to the doctors tho incase you have a chet infection then you can get antibiotics.

i had the exact thing today... in the darkroom at uni... trying to sort my film out in the pitch black... locked in a lil cupbard thing (don't ask its just what we have to do)... and i start coughing to the point where i cant breathe in and the technician is banging on the door asking if i'm ok.. when i do come out i have tears streaming down my face and was unable to talk....

totally embarassing but i just laughed it off...as soon as i could breathe again.
