    BDS Dentistry: Application Process
    The Overall Process

The selection process takes place in three stages:

Selection of those candidates who meet our basic entry requirements
More detailed assessment of your UCAS form in which your personal statement and school/college reference are carefully considered
If this assessment proves satisfactory you will be called for interview
At each stage of the process your UCAS form will be viewed independently by two members of staff.

    Personal Statement
The Personal Statement on the UCAS application form - areas that need to be addressed:

    Reasons for choosing Dentistry
When we read your form we want to begin to develop some insight into what attracted you, as an individual, to dentistry in the first place and what has sustained or confirmed this choice.

    Amount of work experience
You must have observed a dentist at work before you make your application or explain why this has not been possible (we recognise this can prove difficult for some overseas applicants). Ideally this should be a general dental practitioner as this is the role which most of our students fulfil on graduation. The quality of your work experience, in terms of what you learn from it about being a dentist, is more significant than its duration. Should you wish to arrange additional work experience in a specialist area of dentistry this will not be detrimental but will not offer you any advantage in terms of our selection process. It is not necessary for you to have fulfilled the role of a dental nurse.
    Team & Leadership Experience
The practice of dentistry involves a considerable amount of teamwork and in many situations the dentist takes on the role of team leader. Although your skills in team working will be developed throughout the programme at the University of Manchester, the method of learning used in the first two years is Problem Based Learning (PBL) which relies on your ability to work as part of a group. We are keen to find out what experience you have of working as part of a team. This does not have to be a school-based activity it could be in connection with a part time job, sport, volunteer work or your religious community for example.
    Manual Dexterity
From your own experiences of dental treatment and your observation of a dentist during work experience you will be aware of the degree of manual dexterity required in your chosen profession. We need to feel confident that you have some basic fine motor skills and hand-eye co-ordination and a desire to enter a profession to which these skills are central. You may have studied art or craft at school or pursue a hobby which requires considerable dexterity. You may play a sport where hand-eye co-ordination is vital or a musical instrument.
    Other information
Tell us about yourself what you enjoy doing, what you feel passionate about and what you excel at. Are there any contributions that you have made to school or community life of which you feel particularly proud? Dentistry can be a stressful profession as can being a dental student. What do you do to relax when you take a break from academic work? On a more serious note please also tell us here about any mitigating circumstances that may have affected your academic performance. If you feel these are too personal to be included on the form or you need to explain them more fully please write or contact the Admissions Officer (link to contact details under application & selection process) directly.

hey sabrina, these might help u for the content. be sure to cover every single point raised from the manchester dentistry website! + add points of ur own. be sure to have a gr8 style and presentation. a special add-on would be a unique introduction and conclusion. don't end or start with stereotypes like '' being a dentist would be a dream come true'' etc. even if u use the idea behind these common phrases, be sure to have a style of writing of ur own!
    hope this has helped!

u r welcome! dunno any bitewing! one thing u could try is to read some of the PErsonal statements for entry into USA dental schools. i believe these might be widely available on the net. but agn, as u were told, dont copy. read them just to have an idea on what u could write! if u wanna meet students who've been admitted into dentistry, try this website: www.newstudent.org . it's absolutely THE site to make good contacts for students.

Not common at all!!! such things are possible if u r studying in russia or ukraine where the 1st 2 years of study for both medicine and dentistry are much concentrated on general science!

You could try loftx's website www.studential.com - it's made for applicants and there're some example personal statements, all free. Check it out. Btw it's unlikely anyone would email you their personal statements - you do know, however, you might be able to buy one from ebay or something? I saw one once, for medicine, and it was only 99p - although I didn't bother buying it lol. Who knows maybe you'll find something. But just show how committed you are, talk about an aspect of dentistry that you enjoy, then maybe some work experience - it's all the same really.
