The sex of your doctor - bit of a survey

I'm doing some work on Women's Health at the moment (Obstetrics, Gynaecology, sexual health etc - for those of you who don't know, I'm a 5th year medical student) and our group has been discussing the preferences some people have for doctors of a certain sex. Lots of women are much more comfortable with female doctors for intimate examinations etc, and yet I have met some who prefer a man, because they feel the female doctor judges them in comparison to herself. There are also, of course, lots of people who are not really fussed.

So, I've just got a few questions I'd be grateful for some answers to. This is aimed mainly at girls, but guys feel free to answer as well!

What sex is your normal GP?

If you had to see a doctor about a reproductive-related problem, whether that's periods, seeking a termination, pregnancy care etc, would you rather see a male or female doctor, or do you have no preference? What are your reasons for this?

Have you ever had any particularly positive or negative experiences with treatment in this area and if so, what did they involve?

Thanks!

I honestly don't even know who my actual GP is...I seem to see different doctors/nurses whenever I go. I usually have a female nurse though, and last time I saw a doctor it was a male.

If you had to see a doctor about a reproductive-related problem, whether that's periods, seeking a termination, pregnancy care etc, would you rather see a male or female doctor, or do you have no preference? What are your reasons for this?

I saw a male doctor for my first 2 appointments to get the pill and it didn't bother me - I actually feel more comfortable with the male doctor. The female nurse is a bit patronising and makes me feel stupid, to be honest. I'm more comfortable with males in all areas (as teachers, friends, etc) so I guess it makes sense I wouldn't mind a male doctor.

Have you ever had any particularly positive or negative experiences with treatment in this area and if so, what did they involve?

Nope, not really.

female, because i still get shy about subjects that i feel are personal and that a woman would have more emotional understanding if that makes sence

nope, because unless im getting my pill re-done i see the nurse who is lovely

Well, I'm no girl...but I had a female doctor check my testicles once.

My registered GP at home is female, although that was just because my mum picked a name at random when given the choice at the surgery.

If I needed to see a doctor about a feminine issue, then I might prefer a female doctor because - even though the men have had the same training - I randomly think that they might understand a bit more :s-smilie: Although, I wouldn't be bothered if I had to see a male doctor instead.
Why didn;t you make a poll?
I'm male/GP is male
I'm female/GP is male
I'm male/GP is female
I'm female/GP is female
My doctor is a female! Thank God to be honest.
I'd feel so embarrased if I had to go to anyone else.
Whatever I go to her about, I dont feel like shes judging me at all.
It's much easier to talk to her about women things as well, I hate it when shes on holiday and I have to go and see someone else.
Women are far more sympathetic as well....

What sex is your normal GP? Female, although it's a bit of a lottery which doctor at the health centre people get taken by and the others are all male.

If you had to see a doctor about a reproductive-related problem, whether that's periods, seeking a termination, pregnancy care etc, would you rather see a male or female doctor, or do you have no preference? What are your reasons for this? Probably female, I think I'd just feel more comfortable talking to them. Wouldn't particularly mind if I had to see a male though.

What are your reasons for this? I'd prefer to see a male doctor because I always find myself more at ease seeing a man even if it's about gynae problems. I've never really considered the reasons behind the preference however

My Doctor is great, he really took the time out when I was chasing a diagnosis of PCOS to keep me informed every step of the way (forwarding on copies of all correspondence, sending me emails to keep me updated) and also as he wasn't very knowledgeable about it he did reading and then discussed it all through with me both before and after I saw the specialists. He's fab!!

Not always :frown: The last ENT specialist I saw was female, and she was absolutely horrid! Not to mention that she was very, very rude...

Both my surgery at home and in Cambridge are a lottery for making appointments- you get whoever is free!

I try and get a female doctor- I just feel more at ease because it's possible they've experienced the same thing, and will just be more sympathetic. Also, they're more likely to understand what I'm talking about if I can't quite find the right words.

Apart from a stupidly long time to get a diagnosis for PCOS (for about 4 years I got 'You're still quite young, see if they settle down'. I already waited for 4 years, they didn't!), no problems with consultations or rudeness or anything.

She implied that I was lying about how many times I'd been ill, and told me that I should put up with the giant lump in my throat.

So I'm going back for another consultation in a couple of months.... Hopefully I'll get somebody else.

Male

My GP which is male. I feel sooo much more comfortable around male doctors for some reason, especially because my GP in particular is so approachable. I found the woman doctor I visited about the pill quite patronising, and assumed I didn't understand it.. she gave me a leaflet all about why we get periods, and about hormones and things :s-smilie:

Nah no negative experiences as such =]

What sex is your normal GP? - Female, altho I hate her and want to get a new one, a male doctor that I've been to a couple of times before...

What are your reasons for this? - I think if it was about periods, I'd prefer to talk to a female... But for termination/pregnancy care I'd prefer a male.. Dunno why I feel like this tho..

My GP is a female. But i use to be a male.

I dont think i would mind. Just a doctor. :p:

No.

I work in a hospital as a health care assistant and i noticed the other day that when people are talking about doctors they always say he.

My GP is a male... a very good looking male, so usually i can't see him as all the old ladies book random appointments with him to 'flirt' (lol, seriously!!). When i do see him, he's nice as always (been my GP all my life!) - otherwise the rest of the surgery is female

Never had to go to the doctors for this, but i have a feeling i'd rather go to a male - i tend to find some of the older female doctors/nurses a bit judgemental...

Have you ever had any particularly positive or negative experiences with treatment in this area and if so, what did they involve?
Not in that area... Actually, remember once when i was seeing a female doctor she asked rather blunty am i having sex when my dad was in the room (was there for moral support!) - it wasn't needed (i was there about psoriasis) and was just horrible really!!

Male.

I guess I've been used to a male, so I'm not too bothered. Maybe if I was given the choice I'd head for a female doctor though. But then, there are plenty of moody, inconsiderate females in this word, let's not lie to ourselves.
That said, I've only ever needed to go for periody things once, and as it's his job, he obviously wasn't phased one bit...

Have you ever had any particularly positive or negative experiences with treatment in this area and if so, what did they involve?
...He treated me like any other patient and didn't make me feel uncomfortable in the slightest. Again though, just because he's male, doesn't mean he can't be either inconsiderate and arsey, or the most helpful being you've ever come across.

So basically, I've just made myself not be able to decide. Lol.
