TWO WORDS, industrial revolution! Started in England and was the first country to do so, it was said as a fact that the industrial revolution made the modern world! Japan did a study in 2010 that concluded with 54% of the worlds most used inventions was first made in Britain and by a Briton.

The English Language(Global language of business), Modern Science (Newton, Darwin, Faraday, Bessemer, Stephen Hawking, Alan Turing), Literature (Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, J.K. rowling {! }), Parliamentary Democracy, Common Law, the Industrial Revolution (factories, railways, capitalism etc. ), Communications (the World Wide Web, the telephone, television), Modern nursing (Nightingale), Modern Sport (football, rugby, cricket, golf, tennis etc), Music (The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bowie, Adele). At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-quarter of the Earth’s surface and encompassed a third of its population- just to be controversial.

Man-eating sharks, killer crocodiles, deadly venomous snakes, poisonous spiders, malarial mosquitos: truly we are an island blessed for not one of these menaces lives here. It’s almost as if God was trying to tell us something about how special we are.

The most important civil liberties document in the world, magna cart, Habeous corpus. There would be no common and modern law without the Magna Carta. Not forgetting the discovery of DNA, the first police force, underground travel system, Oxbridge, Rolls Royce etc.

I dont think so. When a country rules during a period, you do see those sort of inventions and bright people. It is part of the concentration of power and resources.

If you did your research properly, you will see that there were other great nation-empires that pushed human development. Look at the Egyptians, Moors, Soviets, Greeks, Igbos, Romans, Ethiopians, Chinese etc.

I bet you that in the next century or so, people like you will be arguing about how the USA is the greatest country on earth ever, since it had made great strides in human development such as curing diseases, reducing global poverty, landing a man on the moon, exploring space, protecting the world from global destruction and so on.

I think during its period the UK was a great power, but I dont think it is the greatest country ever. For a great power to rise another must be crumble. We are currently seeing it with the re-emergence of China and the demise of the US with the collapse of the West.

After China, there will be another, maybe India, Nigeria, Brazil, who knows.

Our politics is down the drain, and sure we have revolutionary people with revolutionary ideas, but so do other people in different countries who never get the praise they deserve.

In terms of history we are the greatest. Which country has done more and contributed more than us?

In my opinion the countries who have remained neutral in wars and conflicts, while still building their economy.
We have contributed most to modern society but ^

I'm being pedantic, but what about the Adder? It can be fatal, although rarely.

Whilst the UK has achieved great things, they're almost all in the past now. What is it doing today? Encouraging greater nationalism isn't good IMO.
