Unfortunately it was never a good idea. In the scenario where Cheese and Para are lovers, killing them removes two WW votes and two town votes - but those town votes were never going to be used in towns favour (as evidenced here - if this scenario is true). Similarly, if para had another role, its loss is not a real loss, as it was lost to the town the moment they became lovers.

Any other combination of lovers is better than this one (with regard to the damage they could have done to the town), thus, the town should have acted instantly.

My plan relied on one of them not being a werewolf, where in that situation they would prioritise killing the other wolves over the villagers.

WW can only ever kill 1 per night, regardless of number.
Two sheriff lovers have 4 votes, which is a massive disadvantage.

You were better off without the lovers (provided it is cheese and para, with one WW and one town), then hunting the WW yourselves - particularly as all your power roles were still alive.
