Downton Farm is large dairy and poultry farm located in a small village near York and has been in operation for well over 150 years. The village is rural and well known for farming and agriculture. The present owners of Downton Farm are Mr and Mrs Crawley. The operation of the farm has always involved the use of free range outdoor holding pens which can create a lot of noise and generate some unpleasant smells from the various animals. They also have some hens and cockerels, kept for their egg productions, that crow incessantly. Business has increased recently so they have earlier this year had to buy a milking machine that runs daily from 6am – 10pm. The machine is very large and generates a lot of noise.A number of local residents have been to see you recently asking for advice including: Mary, a local music teacher, who complained that her lessons which she gives to local children in her home are being ruined by the incessant crowing of the cockerels;Edith, a retired local resident who lives in a rented cottage, moved to the village due to her love of gardening. Edith complains that during the summer months, the smell emanating from the farm is so bad that he has to stay indoors instead; andMr Crawley, the farm owner, who complains that his hens are not breeding properly because their neighbour, nearby home-owner Cybil, plays loud music all day long. Cybil has since told you that she does this in retaliation for the loud noise generated by the new machine. Advise Mary, Edith and Mr Crawley
