Why does sometimes potassium permanganate from colourless to purple and sometimes changes from purple to colourless?

it is an oxidizing agent itself used to test for the presence of a reducing agent. Acidified potassium permanganate changes color from purple to colorless in the presence of a reducing agent. I dont think it changes from colourless to purple, since it itself is purple (or pink) in color
