I'm worried about freshers and that I'll end up missing out if I don't buy the tickets advertised. But I don't know what they are for and there are so many different ones! I've been added to so many different groups on fb and I am sooo confused. I don't have much experience clubbing etc and I'm worried.

Well, usually your uni or halls will offer a "freshers pack" which includes tickets for an event each night (often this is specific for each halls of residence as there would be too many people otherwise). It's a good idea to buy this as most people will, then whatever nights you don't fancy going to you can sell the tickets for. Also means when you arrive you can decide with your housemates which ones you're going to.
