Not doing it so hard would be an obvious step. Did you use lube? As well as feeling nice, that will reduce the chance of any tears / friction burns.

If you've any cuts on the skin, some may sting. You can try things like olive oil (not condom safe) which is a) not obviously sex stuff and b) will help keep your skin in good condition.
