I also come from a ‘better’ social background than him, and whilst I, Obviously don’t care, my stepmother does, and she hates him. She refuses to meet him- she did, once, on our first date, for about 5 minutes, and even uses such stupid reasons for disliking him as ‘his eyes are too small’.

Seriously, what's wrong with your stepmother? And I know you said you 'obviously don't care' about his social background but you still did feel the need to bring it up which makes me think you do care.
I mean, you've belitted him in terms of education even though he has gone to college and is planning to go to university, so I don't really know.

It sounds to me like you're young and neither of you are really mature enough to be engaged anyway, you should probably just have a more casual relationship for a while until one of you moves on.
