I can't think of three reasons for the changing nature. I know they were hostile because of British suspicions that russia wanted to dominate western europe, but its the fact the question is asking for the changing nature that throws me.
So far i have:
1. Breakdown of the USSR
2. Both sides wanted to avoid war

Meanwhile on the negative side we have:

1. Economy is a basket case.
2. Authoritarian regime with opposition brutally crushed.
3. Annexation of sovereign states.
4. Alcoholics.
5. No free speech.
6. Delusional aspirations of reclaiming superpower status.
7. Trumps kisses Putin's autocratic ass and aspires to be him.
8. Erdogan secretly emulates Putin.
9. Rampant corruption
10. Keeps Assad in power.
11. Putin needs to antagonise the west to stay in power.
12. Rampant homophobia.
13. Bureaucracy.
14. Paranoia of it's leaders.
15. People are indifferent.
16. Human rights no existent.
