Better to to claim anything so simple as that one characteristic is more important than the other. History as a subject needs historians in different veins, some of which come up with enless wild ideas (of which minority end up being significant), and others who sift through suchg ideas destroying the impossible or implausible and occasionally coming up with their own ideas. We should not rate one type of historian over the other (after all most historians are in the grey area between the two extremes) - rather we should realised that both approaches are essential, albeit very different approaches to the field.
