Nope; it's frowned upon, but the student doesn't have to be there and they're both consenting, aware adults.

On the other hand, it's a ridiculously crap idea.

My two cents

I don't think it is (though don't quote me on that). I don't believe that universities have the same sort of responsibilities for their students as schools do.

I think that the uni will look into it if the lecturer in question is marking any of the students work. It really does depend on the individual university... saying that, I wouldn't mind having mine
I've got a pretty hot one too....

Most universities ban it due to the power professors wield over their students (or even any students in the university due to their connections with other staff and administrators).

Universitys should ban those tight, tight jeans! How am I supposed to work with that in my face! :hubba:

Hehe! All my lecturers have been either ugly or women :frown:

I had a teacher when I was in sixth form at my school who hit on me about a week before we went on exam leave though. It actually really scared me. Thinking back, I should have said something to the school.

As others have said, it's not illegal but the lecturer would most likely lose their job over it (or at least face disiplinary action). Not really the best idea in the world.

depends on whether you plan on telling everybody your dating your lecturer....

Personally I don't see the problem with it, especially since it is possible for there to not be that much of an age gap. Hopefully university students should be able to make up their own minds about who they see, and there are a lot worse people than lecturers out there.

The problem is that the lecturer can make the student's life absolutely miserable if they so choose. That's why relationships between people of authority and those under them are generally not allowed.
One of my friends got into a relationship with a tutor who took our seminars.

It wasn't forbidden, but she did have to move out of the seminar classes and have lessons with a different tutor since it was frowned upon.

It turned nasty in the end though. He turned out to be slightly psycho and decided he hated her (she wasn't showing enough commitment apparently because she didn't want it to get too serious too quickly) so he told everyone in the department that she was 'an evil bitch' and wouldn't leave her alone when they broke up. He was a bit crazy though, I'm sure they aren't all like that.

(Our seminars tutors are generally post grads who take the classes, I don't think he would've been more than 25 yrs old, if that makes a difference.)

I was having this discussion with some of my hall mates.

Is it illegal for a university lecturer to have an affair/relationship of any kind with a university student? We all know that school kid/teacher is illegal, but in this case is it just frowned upon? Or actually illegal?

I think it's very frowned-upon. I actually ended up talking to a chap who lectures at a university (not my own) about this for some reason the other day, who said if he ever had an affair with a current student he'd almost certainly lose his job.

Most of my lecturers are not at all appealing anyhow (old, bad jumpers, socks with sandals, unkempt hair etc...).

edit: The postgrads, however...
I know a lecturer that has been happily married with a woman who was once one of his students back when they were a lot younger. He is still, a very highly respected senior lecturer.
So no, it definitely shouldn't be a bad thing, imo.

It depends on the circumstances, but it's not generally a sackable activity. I fell for and started dating my lecturer in my second year of university. We kept it secret for a while, until we realised everyone knew anyway. The head of department made sure that he didn't mark my work, but I still took his classes and things carried on pretty much as normal. It was a wonderful time of our lives. We've now been together nearly four years and have been living together for two.

And no socks and sandals in sight! Young lecturers are just postgrads with more money and respect.
