t think it's illegal as in the law, but I think it might be illegal within the university, ie. the lecturer would get into serious trouble or be dismissed.

My Dad's a lecturer. And I have asked him this before. lol.

At his university (not saying where) it's just frowned upon.

It's not illegal, and as far as I'm aware, no university in this country is allowed to sack a lecturer for having a consensual relationship with a student (I did a lot of research on this as an undergrad when I was worried about possibly getting my partner sacked!). Cases for dismissal would involve things like:-

- the suggestion of favouritism towards their partner over other students (usually dealt with by making sure the lecturer doesn't mark their partner's work)

- if the relationship is not-entirely-consensual (as in J.M. Coetzee's novel Disgrace, where the student is naive and taken advantage of by a much older professor), and causes the student distress. If a student were to fail or drop out and blame the lecturer, clearly that would be a big problem

- if the lecturer makes a habit of chasing hot 18-year-old tail.

The reason many lecturers get extremely nervous about the idea of dating a student is that if they were to break up acrimoniously, the student could do a lot more damage than simply setting fire to his or her underwear. They could make all kinds of formal accusations, especially if they were emotionally immature. I would never have done that, of course :wink:

I had an affair last year with one of my uni lecturers worst decision, I have ever made I had to leave my course, even now I wish I had not been so stupid, he was just making my life a wreck and I changed my degree course at the uni, only trouble is now he giving me death threats
