Feel like I'm abnormal somehow

This may sound funny but I notice how much of our time is spent thrusting outwards, which everybody else seems to really relish. i guess I must be abnormally introverted or something, but I go crazy just having to focus outward a little every day. If I don't get time for introspection I feel that I'm going mad. It's why i'll go to toilets in a pub and gather my thoughts on a social occassion, or if my parentas have dinner guests I have to go upstairs and think after a certain amount of time,. after dinner is over. I literally cannot take being forced out of introspection for too long, it's like an intensity I have. I wonder if I am abnormal, as other people seem to relish the outward aspect of life and get thoroughly bored when on their own, and I find endless stimulation on my own.

Through masturbation that is

You're not abnormal. It's just that those who are outgoing and social are much more visible - All the other people like you are in their rooms enjoying time by themselves.

I think it's strange that you actually need to dedicate time on a situation basis to introspection, as I don't think most people consider it at all unless they go for extended periods of time without either, e.g. I haven't been out for ages, I haven't had 'alone time' for ages. I wouldn't worry about it though.

There's nothing wrong with you - it sounds like you're amongst the 20-30% of people classed as introverts. If you search it on google there's lots of infomation on introvert/extrovert personalities, but the basic premise is that introverts tend to have fewer but stronger friendships, and tend to spend more time alone than extreverts.

i didnt actually read what any of you wrote - but i agree completely

I also do those things, to an extent. Social things always require a conscious effort on my part, and I will often spend unnecessarily long in toilets etc to gather my thoughts. I never really thought much about it, actually (ironically). When I was travelling with a friend for a month, it would drive him crazy the way I'd retreat into my own head and go blank and quiet, which I never realised I did until he pointed it out.

I suppose people like you and I are abnormal, in that there are perhaps fewer of us than there are of the more socially comfortable people. But there's nothing wrong with being a bit unusual. People just come in different types.

Same here, and it results in my family thinkning I am a recluse, saying things like they dont what me to use the losk on my door at uni because i will 'lock myself away from the world'- do these people not undestand that a lock has nothing to do with it, and I am not no way, sleeping with my door unlocked!

Life suddenly starts to become easier when you develop the confidence to think independently and not be governed by what is socially seen as the optimum.
