BEWARE - London Fashion Models Scam

I recently had a lucky escape with one of these 'portfolio scammers' and thought I should share my story to stop others from falling into the trap and going a step further i.e. shelling out hundreds/thousands.

I submitted a photo on a topmodels.co.uk website and received a text from London Fashion Models saying I'd succeeded in the selection process and to call a number. I spoke with a guy called Tom who asked for a £50.00 deposit for a shoot scheduled for last month (£50.00 which I won't be getting back) although I was assured if I did not purchase any photos taken on the day I would receive a refund.

On the day, I traveled to the 'studios' in Marylebone and arrived to not an office or a convincing studio space but what was essentially someone's refurbished flat, I immediately felt uncomfortable and like this wasn't legitimate. Models were told to sit in the living room, people were there with their families, the room was extremely cramped and dark with blasting music and a pair of women in the corner doing hair and makeup, there was nothing professional about the set up whatsoever. I was told to bring a number of outfits so I brought I suitcase which I had to dump in the hallway amongst other people's and then I grabbed my four different outfits I'd prepared for the four shoots I was expecting to do. Not one of the members of staff introduced themselves or told me the schedule of the day. Nothing was done thoroughly or professionally. The photographer told me what to do for each shoot, which was either indoors or outdoors and it was all very quick and unorganised.

After my final shoot most of the other candidates had left and I was sat waiting in the living room. A young lady entered and asked me to follow her into the 'office'. The office was more like a hole in the wall with a couple of chairs and a desk, it was extremely cramped and dark with one light, you couldn't fit three people in there. We began to look through my photos and she couldn't give me enough compliments about how natural I was at modeling etc etc. She then asked me what I wanted to get out of this pursuit which I thought was odd, I was expecting her to tell me the procedure, whether they thought I had potential and on that basis offer me work.

I said all of this to her (that I wanted to see where I could get to as a model) and asked how she thought I had performed. She then told me that I had an incredible amount of potential and that they wanted to have me on board and to start getting the work in for me. At this moment, the Company Director Matthew was suddenly in the doorway, he introduced himself and was very kind and charming. The woman at the desk continued, telling me I would need to set up an Efolio as a visual CV for clients to look at when searching for a model.

There were three packages to choose from Gold, Diamond and Platinum and the difference between the three was the amount of photos and the ability to edit and modify those photos. The prices of these packages were, £2500.00, £4500.00 and £6000.00. I was told if I wanted to have any of the photos taken on the day and to start up an Efolio, I would have to choose one of these ridiculous options. This online portfolio would then get me work with top brands, according to them 'Dolce & Gabbana', 'ASOS'. Being excited by the opportunity and overwhelmed by all of the praise (strategic), I didn't realize I was being scammed initially and then I called my parents who immediately told me I was in a pressured selling situation and was being scammed MASSIVELY.

My father being a business owner tested the Director, asking for a copy of the contract to look at and said only on that basis would any payment be made. Matthew apologized and said he couldn't provide a copy of the contract (because it's not legitimate) and then tried to convince him that pressured selling wasn't going on. My dad said to him if my daughter is that good and you want to employ her, you will let her bring the contract home for review and come back to you but Matthew would not budge. His excuse was having to delete the photos if no contract was signed on the day they were taken for privacy reasons (********).

Once I realized what was going on I got out of there and avoided paying thousands of pounds for an online portfolio of photos. I was sent a Welcome pack, emails etc before my shoot to make it looks legitimate but extreme caution people, it's not.

If an agency or modelling channel for agencies tells you that they need to shoot a 'portfolio' or suggests a 'free shoot' but with the addition of buying prints or images IT'S A SCAM. A models book should not cost hundreds/thousands of pounds and should not be shot by only one person or in one studio in a day.

The TopModels website I submitted a photo on come up on every search of legitimate agencies on Google and use their names to seem reputable, do not get scammed!

The exact same thing happened to me yesterday. They told me I would have to pay ridiculous amount of money and I said no. On the phone I had to pay £100 which I did and In the studio they made me 100 fair fair. I don't really seem to trust them

I unfortuantely fell for this too and was told in 3 weeks i have been offered a shoot paying 1000 plus a day, and that the paper work would be signed off the following day and id get a phonecall to confirm. No phone call, and when i phoned them they said i must have misunderstood.. although i asked him to repeat himself a few times. Ive let the bank know and am waiting to hopefully get a refund. The names on the paperwork are fake - william viewer and imani booker being the viewer and the booker. This would invalidate the paper work? I am going to report this to ripp off britain on bbc.

Hello. I can verify this is genuine. I have spoken to this person. Please get in touch and tell your story.
It's seems like most of the so called "agencies" make money from people's dreams and aspirations. I have just recently had 2 experiences and it all sounds nice and fabulous until we get to the point of the hidden expenses and costs. ONE MODELS, IMPACT STUDIO etc. - they all promise you great future only if you pay them for expensive portfolios. ONE MODELS for example, have grown more sophisticated in their ways to entice gullible clients - they say from the very beginning that, unlike other agencies they are totally free! Yes, but no! At some point when they tell you that you look like a star and have a great potential they'd ask you for the so called "DEPOSIT" which they say is totally refundable, but....the whole point is to make you visit their audition, make some photos and...tell you in the end that without them you can't start working for the agency. And if you do have a portfolio, like I do, they will tell you things like - the quality doesn't cover their standards, you don't have outdoor or indoor or whatever photos etc, just to make you pay for their "professional", "superior" photos a bag of money, and, of course thus keeping your deposit of min. £50-100!!! I'm sorry, but I have never had such an experience in with any serious and truly professional agency I've worked for! They just liked me and my initial photos very much (which photos, by the way, were totally unprofessional and much poorer quality than the ones you might have). And because they genuinely did like me they invested all the necessary resources (professional photos and portfolio, training etc) and...in a few weeks started to call me for all sorts of commercials and modelling. So, BEWARE!!! Don't trust anybody who asks you for any money upfront or later, pretending to be your future employer! Employers are supposed to give not take money, right!?

Alias2 - who does he work for and how do you know he is genuine? How does he plan to use the info we give him?

Just out of interest, do models have to have a particular 'look' or do the agencies want ordinary looking folk as well? The family member who nearly fell for the scam, his sister was giving him a hard time for being conceited and even thinking he could be modelling material.

They will tell anyone they have modelling potential if they can get money out of them.

Did you offer any work coz i paid 500 and I realized that I messed up badly bht I asked them to change into basic instead of gold nf they refusing to it amd asking me they will only get me contacts once I pay the full amount which I will never do it and just want to know is there any1 who paid full money and still got nothing from them.

Yes I paid £3000.00 for a website with 40 photos and twelve months after care and hosting. I got 14 photos on a poor website and no after sales care or assistance to get into modelling. I am trying to sue these scamming swines but who to sue ? LFM , Bespoke Models, Mango Studios, Miller Reeves. Take your pick . All limited companies, same or joint directors in all, same addresses.. Oh and the new one, Studio. Works.
A county court summons for breach of contract under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Will cost £80.00. Can be issued on line. Contact the CAB. And Trading Standards to assist.

Also, I tried to email them and my email bounced back. What scum.. i cant believe they are getting away with this. The questions i was asked on the day were so misleading a photo studio would not need to aske such things such as piercings and tatoos, availibility to go abroad if need be. Ect ect.

Yes the mobile numbers no longer work. The emails aren't answered. If they answer the land line they know nothing. Not even their Head office address where court summons can be served. Please do as I advised it may help .

Original post by OscarS1
Hi All

Exact same thing happened to me as well. We were fooled into paying £2500 for website/efolio and photos. This happened over the last weekend. The company we went to is called The Studio Works.

I will post my entire story very soon.

Has there been anyone who has had success in getting the money back.

I have contacted my credit card provider and several other bodies all pending review.

I really need someone to help us wither their story and advice.

Hi All

20 days into this scam and having lost £2500. I have done the following.

Reported to the Police
Reported to Citizens Advice Consumer Service
Wrote to the Credit Card Company to refund stating breach of Contract.
Wrote to an MP
Spoke to the Reporter whose number is on this forum

We should get together and share our stories and results as at the end of the day we all want our money back and together we can create awareness.

Let me know what you guys think

Once you have reported this to Consumer Direct, and Watchdog please do the following.
Send a recorded delivery letter to whoever your payment was made to e.g. Miller Reeves, Black Rose, LFM, the Studio. Keep a copy.
Detail your complaint . If it is like my situation.....
Then state .....
I paid for 40 photographs on a website, There are 14. I paid for 12 months hosting and 12 months after care and modelling coordination. You are in breach of contract in accordance with the Consumer Rights Act 2015. The efolio is not as described and you have failed to provide the service paid for.
If you do not refund my money within 7 days I will issue a County Court Summons without further notice.
IF you paid on credit card write to the credit card company under section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974, they are equally and severally liable.
Keep at it guys.
