I was wondering if anyone knows any sites where students can look for a place to rent? University halls are quite expensive so I'd like to be able to find more options.

You can look at SpareRoom. It isn't student specific although I know of students that have used it. It's people who are renting and looking for a housemate, or someone who has a spare room in their house, etc.. You can filter the results by quite a lot different criteria - price, map location, flat mate preferences, property type etc, pets allowed, smoking/ non-smoking, which is quite handy.

It's also worth doing the search: "[Insert city name] student homes" as some universities - University of Manchester, and the University of London, for example - have websites where trusted, university vetted private landlords/ letting agents can advertise properties they have locally, including house shares.

Some major estate agents in big student cities also have areas of their websites dedicated to listing student properties, so it's worth looking those up for your area too.

spareroom is a good one for looking for house shares, and its usually clear which ones are for students, however unless you want a quiet environment I would reccomend uni halls for first year. Reasons:

-No need to have to travel up for a day or two househunting, you can trust what you are getting. With a private let you need to do viewings yourself as you can't trust the house will be the same as in the pictures.
-Bills included so no arguments over paying them.
-A great way to meet lots of freshers, especially handy if you want to go out in freshers week. Private houseshares are 90% second year plus students who already have their friendship groups and won't have so much time to go out.

The websites mentioned above are good. Also keep checking your student FB page as people will drop out of house shares and want replacements - bear in mind this will be cheaper but you'll have to join an established friendship group. There will also be private halls around whcih are often cheaper - you should be able to google these for your city. Your uni accommodation service may also be able to help you.

You can try using Campusboard.co.uk. I have recently used the website to find a flatmate for my house and it seemed like there were plenty of other students offering accommodation as well. Maybe you’ll find something that suits you.
