What actually is a U grade? I know it means unclassified but does that mean they got no marks at all in an exam??

No marks/they might have not attended the exam. It could also mean you didn't score enough marks for the next grade. Could be F or E above a U, therefore you get a U.

At GCSE it means you did not get enough marks for a grade G.

In the past for exams like Maths which have two tiers it also meant you did not get enough marks for the lowest grade at Higher tier.
