It was a strange figure -like a child; her not so like a child as like an old man.

It refers to the Ghost of Christmas Past, no? Firstly, the"child"-like appearance of the apparition evokes its innocence and good intentions, which Scrooge is keen to "extinguish" by covering its light with a cap, suggesting his unwillingness to change. Dickens presents the ghost possibly as representing Scrooge's side of innocence as the "old man" he now is, foreshadowing to the reader his potential to change.

It is significant that the ghost is "child"-like, as he takes Scrooge back to his times of innocence and youth. That it appears "strange" is a clear reference to the supernatural, but the phrase "figure" implies that for Scrooge, his appearance is very much real.

Do you think this quote is worth analysing?

"Was light one instant, at another time was dark so the figure itself flactuated into distinctness " -past
