Yini question...

I wanna take a gap year and spend most of it working (on something related to engineering) but I also wanted to spend atleast a month or two travelling and chilling. The Year In Industry scheme (yini) seams to be the best plus it is recommended by cambridge uni yet on the site it says that the jobs last for 12 months. I would prefer something between 6 to 10 months. Is this possible with YINI.

Another question is: do cambridge expect you to work for 12 months during your gap year?

thanx

Btw if anyone has any experience with YINI or something similiar please comment

You should probably be able to get a shorter placement (perhaps not as short as six, but ten months is likely), since most contracts are negotiable anyway. But get in contact with them for a more definite answer.

I think more important for Cambridge is that you spend time revising the topics you would've forgotten over that year off school. I really don't think they expect you to spend all 12 months working.
i thought oxbridge didn't like gap years :s-smilie:

Forgive me for "selling" YinI, but hey...

The Year in Industry have recently introduced a new scheme they call the YinI Combo, which will be available for applicants in the next cycle (i.e. taking a gap year 2008-9). It combines a placement and travel option.
YinI have joined up with four companies (BUNAC, Raleigh International, Projects Abroad and Coral Cay) to provide you with the opportunity go travelling and get the benefit of a year working in industry. You also get a discount on your travel placement. You work from August/September through to May if you're doing BUNAC or June if you're doing the others.
Basically, when you sign up for YinI you'll have to tick a box or something saying that you're interested in doing the combo. If you get a placement (bear in mind that it's not guaranteed that you will), your manager person has to sign off that it's OK for you to not work the full year and then I assume you're sorted.

I'm doing YinI this year, and have already got my travel plans sorted for August next year, so you don't HAVE to do it through the combo scheme. It makes sense, though, seeing as you get the discount (it's something like 10 or 15%, which is really good) and you know you've got the support of you company.
@ tami......

nah oxbridge are fie with gap years as long as you have something constructive planned for example YINI or travelling etc, they actually recommend it in alot of subjects such as engineering etc...........

Yeah that yini combo thing does look quite interesting although I dont know if I wanna do some volunteering or just go backpacking with some friends. Would they let you have less than twelve months if you dont want to take up any of the proposed holidays but would rather go alone.

Has anyone tried one of these volunteering trips? I would like to take part if it is something for young people that is really enjoyable and beneficial at the same time not just backbreaking work.
I am gonna stay on 2-3 months extra and thus earn more money rather than travel around. I just wanted to make that clear.

I applied for YINI as luck, really. I stumbled into the talk during Careers week, it's really a good idea. Though a placement isn't definite the year experience looks fabulous on your CV especially as they have the CMI course as well, the combo would be best in truth.

I applied for a law student job and first interview EVER was the YINI scheme, got in then second was for a law firm, got in too, they have good paying jobs as well so the money from your job could help fund your trip.

Yeah that ****ing CMI course does not apply to everyone though - be very sure that they will allow you to do it. They wouldn't let me do it.. ****ers.

Wth, why weren't you permitted to do it? o_O;

And they better let me do it now or I'll kick up a fuss, I'll admit they are rather slow with getting back to you after your placement interviews. ):
Most companies expect or even force you to do the CMI...

With regard to length of placement - this is really nothing to do with yini and is totally down to your employer once you get through the interview stage.

I wouldn't be too upset about not being able to go on the CMI course - the only good thing about it was meeting other people that are on placements - the social was rather fun I have to say, but the work was pretty naff.

I would definitely recommend taking the maths course that is on offer - I started but never finished which was a massive mistake - my civ eng course is hugely mathsy and you WILL forget things. Plus this gives you a nice headstart
