I have the same type of query. I want to work in marketing, PR or advertising of some sort and was wondering what the best unis to go to would be? The top ones don't seem to offer many choices.

Also, is a degree with any form of media in the title looked upon as a bit crap? Would it be a waste of time doing marketing with media communications at Buckingham for example?

hmm i know what you mean about the top uni's not having many choices. it's because they focus on the academic subjects wheras the uni's that do the vocational courses such as advertising etc are branded as "not as good". i'm currently trying to find out what is more important to a pr agency - a pr degree or a businessy type degree somwhere like durham/oxford etc. i've emailed the top pr consultancies asking them what qualifications they look for in an applicant and am currently waiting on replies.
the best university for communication/media subjects is bournemouth.

i dont think a degree with media in is looked upon as not good, as long as its a main subject "WITH media". media communications however does sound brilliant, because it's learning about communicating through the media, which is what PR consultancies are after i think... besides, it's marketing WITH media communications, which means you will be doing 75% marketing and 25% media communications, making it an added bonus

Is PR sort of 'selling' a company/organisation; by establishing good contacts with the media/distributing information and stuff? I can't work out if it would appeal to me or not. I know what advertising entails, but what about marketing? Is it basically helping to sell products?
LCC is good for public relations, it's part of the university of the arts.

Hi, when those PR consultancies get back to you, could you please give me a heads up on what they say, because I am in a similar predicament.

Much appreciated
Honestly, do you degree in whatever, they really dont care because PR is all about people skills. If you are an excellent communicator and have a flair for writing, pitching ideas to clients and organising then you are 3/4 way there.

Try and get experience more than anything. This is what they look for on your cv. I was told all this by a director within one of Londons top private PR agencies on work experience
