18th Birthday Meal..

Sooo it's nearly my 18th birthday and I'm currently finding it really hard to decide which restaurant to go to with my friends as a celebration! Norwich has most of the restaurants any city has.. But I was wondering where other people have gone/are planning to go for their 18th! I'm not just thinking about specific restaurants, but the type of thing you'd look for - type of food, drink, location, cost, size etc... you get the point!

So, yeah.. what do people think?

I'd probably go to this Chinese/Oriental place down the road, which has a fairly cheap all-you-can-eat buffet thing - you can try loads of different things then and there's bound to be something everyone likes.

Im planning to do this in march. Ill probably go to some fancy restaurant, where people will have the choice between fish, meat and pasta for the main course, just starters in the middle and a birthday cake at the end. I will take everyone out to the club here after though

Pick the meal you want, then search for the best place that does it!

For my 19th, I found a fantastic restaurant that sold the best lamb chops and chips

I had a house party for my 18th. Drank a lot, had my friends' band playing on the patio, almost died falling out a window, oh yes it was good. Do that! Without the window bit, obviously

My best friend recently had a surprise meal organised for her at Pizza Express (her fave, and almost everybody will find something to eat there, nice restaurant surroundings etc) which was nice, followed by a bar and then a nightclub.

Something themed might be nice - Mexican's tend to be fun and the environment normally very relaxed and suitable for a fairly big group. I've been to quite a few Greek/Mediterranean restaurants which are small independant and tend to have entertainment/music/dancing throughout the night which is also fun - I've found the waiters in these places to be very friendly, put a lot of effort in to entertainment and getting everyone up to dance at the end or join in with the traditional Greek dancing/smashing plates etc. The food is quite varied and usually does more traditional stuff as well as grilled meats and chips/rice.

An Italian restaurant might be nice, usually a little more upmarket and with pizza/pasta there is usually something everyone can eat. I've been to some with quite a pretentious/stuffy atmosphere where groups chatting or giggling quietly seem to be frowned upon and hurried out asap. Of course it depends on what they're like, but I've had a few experiences like this in independent Italian restaurants in London. Places like Zizzi, Ask or Pizza Express provide a nice balance to this if it's that kind of food you're after.

I'd personally avoid Indian, Chinese or Thai - hard to predict the quality of the food if you haven't been there, and are more acquired tastes, so not great if you've got older relatives who I find are sometimes more hostile to trying spicy or 'unusual' cuisine or anyone particularly fussy.

I'd go for somewhere with a fairly generic menu - like i said, a mediterranean/greek or a nice italian chain, or a nice but authentic Mexican (no Old El Paso kits and rubbery food). Somewhere they'll be accomodating of a larger group and possibly who have some music or entertainment - there are quite a few places in London which have clubs attached or turn in to clubs after a certain time which are really good (Roadhouse, Los Locos etc), not sure whether Norwich has the same sort of thing.

Cost obviously depends on who is paying and how much money you want to spend/anticipate everyone else will have to spend. I'd say go for somewhere mid-priced, £15-£20 a head is probably about average for the italian chains, for a starter, main and drink which I think is very reasonable. If the bill will be split, don't go somewhere too expensive or book tables at The Ivy if you think it might pose a problem for some people, as you wouldn't want them to miss out because they can't afford a night out somewhere expensive on top of a birthday present etc. But at the end of the day it's your choice, eat where you want to and I'm sure everyone will be happy with that choice, it's your birthday after all!

Prettyblueeyes, I work in the Pizza Express in Norwich so I'll probably try and get out of there for my birthday! I agree the food is nice, but it's not very exciting for me now! :p:

I really do want to go somewhere where everyone will find something they like.. I've ruled out chinese - there are a couple of main chinese restaurants in Norwich but I don't reeally fancy them for my 18th.

I think I might go for Zizzi's!

Was thinking about American food (e.g Frankie & Benny's, Old Orleans..), but I've been to them quite a lot so it's nothing new!

Anyway.. yeah, maybe Zizzi's. Or maybe somewhere even better I find! Only bad thing about Zizzi's is that they don't do any big Ice Cream Sundaes!

Sophierw, I wish I could have a house party for my 18th.. but unfortunately my parents aren't very keen! (they're worried about carpets getting ruined..!)

For my 18th I went to a nice pub where there was a restaurant. Meant we could have drinks before a meal

My 18th was at TGI Friday's- only because they do amazing ice cream cocktails which are to expensive to justify for any other night out  Food for everyone's tastes though and it tends to be a laid-back/fun environment.

My friend just had her 18th at a pub...it was great as we all had drinks before and after the meal, stayed as long as we wanted, and we could be a bit louder if we wanted as it was a pub/restuarant (a posh one, granted but still!) rather than just a restuarant (it makes a difference i think!)

Wherever you go try to keep it relatively light because presumably you want to do other stuff afterwards.

Ooohh, go to Zizzi's! My boyfriend took me for my 20th and 21st (at my request!) and had the most gorgeous meals (I'm ashamed to admit I had the same thing both times because it was so nice!)

I'm sure if you let them know it's your birthday they'll rustle up some sort of ice cream incredibly-fattening-and-sinful-but-amazing-all-the-same sundae. If not, you could always go elsewhere for pudding? My friend works at TGI's and always puts a good word in about their desserts. If you wanted to do this though, i'd tend to go somewhere you can go for food OR drink, not just a restaurant. TGI's also do an amazing cocktail called a Barnamint Baileys which is sooo good!

Have a good time whatever you do!

I looked at their menu yesterday and there was nothing for me :frown:
