no urinary tract infection?

The last couple of weeks on and off I've been having burning down there and constantly feeling the need to pee. I was certain it was a urinary tract infection and it was becoming too painful to ignore so I went to the doctors and gave them a urine sample. However they said the test for uti was negative?? now im confused and trying to wonder what else it could be. I've had the uti antibiotics and it has seemed to have gone now... :/

I've only ever had one sexual partner and were still together and both him and me were virgins

Have one anyway. Just in case...

Hmm.

I don't understand why the doctors gave you UTI antibiotics if the test was negative. Maybe they meant to say it was positive...I swear to god I don't understand GPs sometimes. If it went...and you're sure you don't have anything dodgy...don't worry I guess.

If it's only a dipstick, it can be negative even if you do have an infection - which can only be diagnosed definitively on culture (which means they send the sample off to the lab).

If the antibiotics have made it go, then finish the course and don't worry about it

Suspected UTIs are often treated empirically with antibiotics before confirmation that it is a UTI.
There's lots of "evidenced based" guidelines about why this is the best thing to do, though obviously it can lead to over-prescription.

Similar principles in suspected meningitis. Often to prove there's a bug you need to grow it = can take a few days. Meanwhile...

What you have sounds a lot like the symptoms of cystitis.
I used to get it quite a lot a few years ago and sometimes even when I went to the GP and they tested my urine for a UTI it would come up negative or just wouldn’t really show much of anything.
I used to be given antibiotics anyway which usually cleared it up. It’s strange. Sometimes your GP will send the sample off to be tested properly.
It sounds a lot like it was a UTI of some sort, if its cleared with the antibiotics.
