A provisional is id. easy peasy, absolutely acceptable id.

Reply 2

Depends what you are using it for, i think. I know some banks don't accept provisional license as ID.

Just to get into places to proove I'm 18. I only have my passport and it expires soon so when I send it back will not have anything for ID. Also, don't particularly like having to take my passport out with me...

Reply 4

It is acceptable in the majority of places - only a very small minority of clubs with tough door policies would reject you because it is a provisional. Personally, I've never been turned away.

Reply 5

It is counted as ID, yeah. But some places are a**holes and won't accept it.

For the most part it's fine though.

Reply 6

Most places accept provisionals, but the pub I used to work at didnt- so it all depends.
Generally, you shouldnt have a problem

Reply 7

They're good enough for international air travel though. It's odd that places won't accept them, I guess they've got to be pretty in demand if they can afford to be that choosy.

Reply 8

I've never heard of any not accepting provisional....Do they not like people who cant drive yet or something?

But yeah, doubt you'd get much trouble with provisional. Had mine over a year and had no problems whatsoever.

You have to go through the same checks etc to get a provisional (in fact generally you go through the checks for provisional, then the full one is automatic once you've passed the test.

As a means of id it is just as good as a full one - and anywhere turning you away for not having full ID is, i beleive, breaking the law (the two "legal" forms of ID are a driving license and a passport)

Any licenced premesis can refuse entry, any (or no) reason.

Yes but they cant claim that you have improper ID.

At the very least they should be good citizens and call the police.

Incorrect. A full driving licence has the added assurance that the individual who gave you a driving test has seen the provisional and compared the person present with the photograph etc provided.

They can claim whatever the like. I suppose you could sue them for slander if it was untrue and had caused you some sort of harm.

but surely the bouncer looking at the photo can assure its the right person just as well as the driving instructor can.

i used a provisional for my entire first year at uni and never had a problem. Several of my friends only have provisionals and never had an issue. sometimes they look twice at the date of birth before giving it back to you but other than that i never had an issue. i've edven got friends with no intention of learning to drive who got provisionals purely rfor id purposes

So? That isn't a requirement for most passport applications and anyone can look at a photograph and verify similarity with the owner of the card. Also, oldies like me got a photocard without having an examiner look at me (as I changed from a paper licence) and so many people have a full photocard licence without that assurance, which is irrelevent in terms of validating ID.

The problem is simply one of confusion, people see the word 'provisional' and assume that means 'not proper' even though for ID purposes the provisional licence includes exactly the same beaurocratic checks as a full licence and is just as valid an official form of identification.

That's why I want one really. I have no desire to drive as I don't need to and never have done. I'm perfectly happy with walking/catching the bus. It's also a rather large expense which I don't particularly want to pay.

There are loads of people that are 20-21 that haven't passed their test. Some of us just aren't really bothered about being able to drive.

I dont even look anywhere near the same as I did when I got my photo taken for it in 2003, and I've still never got it handed back and told to feck off.

I've only ever had an odd look once because it wasnt an English Prov. licence and they never saw one like mine before, but what can ya do! Still got in.
