Dieing sensation in sleep

i've never had this before. Im 20 years old, but yesterday i saw my sister offering prayers in my room , and i fell from my bed(in my dream) and slowly fell to the ground, it felt really weird. Like i wasnt alive or something, as if id lost my consciousness and i found it difficult to breathe and i kept trying to cough but i couldn't. Then i woke up i realised it was a dream. I dont know if i should go sleep again, that was the worst feeling ever.

Is this common? What is it?

I have had feelings of falling before in my sleep; I think it's nothing major to worry about - maybe you have been a little stressed / anxious recently and your mind has gone into overdrive.

Don't think about it too much; our mind can stir up the weirdest feelings when it feels like it. Just remember it was only a dream and is unlikely occur again. If it does, maybe consider being more relaxed during the day and if you have any worries or stress, make sure you try to solve any problems you might have.

Did you have any physical symptoms on waking? (shortness of breath, inability to move etc?) It sounds like it could have been a night terror or hallucinatory sleep disorder.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_terror

Edit: the difference between that and nightmares:

"Unlike nightmares, which are frequently a scary event dream (e.g. a monster under the bed, falling to one's death, werewolves and monsters chasing you etc.), night terrors are not dreams. Usually there is no situation or event (scary or otherwise) that is dreamt, but rather the emotion of fear itself is felt. Often, this is coupled with tension and apprehension without any distinct sounds or visual imagery, although sometimes a vague object of fear is identified by the sufferer. These emotions, generally without a focusing event or scenario, increase emotions in a cumulative effect. The lack of a dream itself leaves those awakened from a night terror in a state of disorientation much more severe than that caused by a normal nightmare. This can include a short period of amnesia during which the subjects may be unable to recall their names, locations, ages, or any other identifying features of themselves. This state generally passes after only one or two minutes."

I felt like I was drowning in my sleep before and I jerked bolt upright and wide awake. Was a little scary.

I once dreamed that I was dying. I just lost the intention to live or something and slowly felt my heart stopping and then i suddenly snapped out of it like "I dont want to die!" and woke up. Im still not sure if it was just a dream, dream paralyzes or that I was actually about to die

I get these often, sucks. When I was little I used to just go and get a hug from my mum or dad. Now that I'm by myself, I just sit up to calm my nerves after such episodes - make some tea/have a glass of water.

My recent habbit is jumping and becoming wide awake in the middle of the night in a state of panic over nothing.
It's not nice but it is just a dream/nightmare, just some of us dream more vividly than others!
I, for example, often wake my partner up to get him out of bed and away from 'danger' the other night i thought a crane was going to get him and so i woke him up in a panic.
My poor boyf, he copes so well with me :P

My tips are not watching or thinking of anything scary/depressing before bed
Stay off the cheese late at night (believe me cheese does cause me probs!)
Have a light by the bed so as soon as you wake yourself up you can turn the light on, this helps you realise quicker that it was a dream and that you are fine
And last of all, maybe try Calms sleep tablets - they are natural and can help you sleep more securely.

Hope you feel better soon!

hmm... probably a dream
last year i woke up in the middle of the night on holiday, and i couldn't breathe properly and it was really odd, and i thought i was going to die.
i think it was a panic attack...
it's weird cos i don't actually remember what i was dreaming, and this had never happened before.
and then i was scared to go to sleep, but in the end i did
and ive been sleeping well ever since.

so, it's all fine
everythings weird and scary at night anyway.

Sounds like sleep paralysis. I had it once before, coundn't move or breathe properly, thought I was going to die....but it wasn't dream.

It's just when you wake up too soom during your REM sleep (where you are naturally paralysed and you wake up before the chemicals that paralyse you ear off or something along those lines.

I've died twice in my dreams. (Once a few years ago, once last night)

I've never felt like I couldn't breathe before though. If anything, my breathing seems to get easier once I've died.

*sounds crazy now*

Don't recall any falling sensations, but i've died 3 times in dreams - each with a different death/after death sensation.

Falling sensations are very common in dreams. Some believe its because we're all descended from monkeys and monkeys sometimes sleep in trees...

Yeah falling is common in dreams. Most people I know have experienced it.

The worst dream I had that I thought was real though, was one where I commited suicide in my dream through an overdose and suddenly my vision started fading out to white as I died and in my dream I was thinking "this is it, this is what dying feels like". Then I woke up. Freakin' strange. I was really traumatised when I woke up.

Its nothing to worry about. The general consensus among researchers is that, as your muscles begin to slack and go into a restful state just as you are falling asleep; your brain senses these relaxation signals and misinterprets them, thinking you are falling down. The brain then sends signals to the muscles in your arms and legs in an attempt to jerk you back upright. This misinterpretation that takes place in your brain may also be responsible for the “falling” dreams that accompany the falling sensation. These “dreams” are not really normal dreams, as they are not produced from R.E.M sleep, but rather more like a daydream or hallucination in response to the body’s sensations.
