Hey guys, I need to know every single topic that may come up tomorrow for some last minute revision. Can anyone give me a list?
Here are the case studies you need to for the main 4 topics:

Summary of case studies for Restless Earth:

  • o Mauna Loa (shield) and Mount Pinatubo (composite) – contrasting volcanoes
  • o Haiti and New Zealand – the effects of an earthquake in an MEDC & LEDC
  • o Sakurajima Volcano, Japan and Mount Nyriagongo in the Congo – the effects of a volcano in an MEDC & LEDC
  • o Tsunami – Japan – effects
  • o Montserrat – safely predicting and evacuating a volcano
  • o Izmit, Turkey and Kashmir, Pakistan - evaluating the responses and long term planning in earthquakes

Summary of Case Studies for Climate Change:

  • o Natural climate change

o Little Ice age (historical climate change) the effects on people and ecosystems)

o Megafauna (geological climate change) – the effects on the ecosystem

Human induced climate change:

o UK – the economic and environmental effects of climate change (developed country)

  • o Bangladesh – the economic and environmental effects of climate change (developing country)

Summary of Case Studies for Biospheres:

  • o The Adis people in northern India – how do this community use the mountain rainforests sustainability?

o The Tropical Rainforest: Ecosystem Goods and Services

o Amazon rainforest – how is the rainforest been degraded by direct destruction – deforestation, mining, conversion to farmland

o Antarctica – indirect degrading of the biome by climate change – declining krill & fish

o UK & birds – indirect degrading of the biome by climate change – declining birds

o Kilum, Cameroon (Africa) – local scale management of biomes - Core conservation and buffer zone.

o CITES – Global scale approaches to biosphere managements

  • o Udzungwa, Tanzania – evaluating the sustainability of conservation schemes (EXTRA)

Summary of case studies for Water:

  • The Sahel – the impact of water scarcity
  • The River Danube, Eastern Europe – interference in water quality (pollution)
  • The Colorado River and Hoover Dam, USA – interference in water supply – reservoir construction.
  • Israel – over abstraction and pollution of the groundwater
  • The Three Gorges Dam and the Hoover Dam – Costs and benefits of a large scale water project
  • Hand dug wells in Burkino Faso & rainwater harvesting in Mali – small scale water projects
