Extreme nausea on period

Normally when I get my period, I have cramps, back pain, I'm a little more tired than normal, and generally feel a bit "out of it". It sucks, but I can deal with it.

Anyway, I got my period yesterday. I felt really out of it all day - had trouble concentrating and focusing on the words in a handout from our lecturer. Had the usual backpain etc, and was really tired. Had a full night's sleep.

Today, a few hours after waking up, I went to the store and a wave of nausea and dizziness hit me. I thought I was going to faint in the store. It passed and I got back to my flat okay, but I felt nauseous again and thought I might vomit. Sometimes, I feel sick if I haven't eaten for a while so I made myself a sandwich even though I wasn't hungry. No luck. Eventually, I decided to skip class, lay down, and hope it would pass. I drifted in and out of sleep all day since about noon (it's now 7:20), esentially forcing myself to go back to sleep when I realized how nauseous and vomitty I still felt upon waking. I thought I felt better when I woke 10 minutes ago, but concentrating on my bright computer screen is doing my head in.

My period doesn't seem particularly heavy today, but I've never felt sick in this way when on my period. I feel like I should eat more but the mere thought of food makes me feel worse.

As a side-note, for at least a week and a half prior to this, I have felt unusually tired all day and had trouble concentrating on things. I'm not sure if this is related.

Should I be worried about this, or should I just sleep some more, hope it passes, and forget about it? Suggestions on how to make me feel better are welcome too

Yeah, I think you have the right to be a bit worried.
Straightforward pain is pretty normal but the whole sickness nausea thing is a bit strange.
I reckon you should go to the doctor, they might be able to give you these pain killers that stop the uterus contracting and squeezing so much through your period.
You might have a hormone inbalance as well, so you should get it checked out...

Good luck

I get that occasionly. Sometimes I feel almost like I have to flu (diziness and nausia like you descirbed and general can't-move-ness) and cry becaues my all my hips and legs hurt madly.

But that's only a few months a year and the rest of the time is normal.

Painkillers and bed and sleep work well. I'm never like it for more than a day.

Poor you! Before I went on the pill every three months I would have funny episodes that consisted of fainting over and over again having hot/cold sweats and excruciating cramps for about eight hours, eventually the pain and the nausea would wipe me out and I would fall asleep. Eurgh, horrible!

I would say visit your GP, I doubt if its anything to worry about but it musnt be a nice thing to live with, they'll probably suggest the pill to sort you out- its a godsend IMO.

Are you sure you're not just ill and it's coincided with your period?

I sometimes felt like that when I was younger, I think I just grew out of it.

Not to panic you or anything, but have you been using tampons? I'm just thinking a few of those symptoms sound TSS-like, but then reading about it, I think you'd be a lot worse than you are by now- rash, severe fever etc. If you don't improve, I'd go to the doctors.

It's quite possibile that the tiredness you felt a week or so prior to your period was the start of some sort of virus, and now it's developed at the same time as our period coming, by chance. Nausea and even vomiting can be quite common side effects from periods for some people, but they don't tend to just come on; you normally would have had them with every period. I'd see your doctor if possible to check that everything's in order. I hope you feel better soon!
There is a really bad sickness going around lately so you could of caught a bug while feeling run down on the build up of your period
Hey..

I know exactly what you're going through. I've gone through this for like 5 years. My first day is the absolute worst, I'm alright, but then the pain gets worse and worse my thighs are normally in excrutiating pain along with stomach. The pain gets so bad that I actually puke up a good few times, and that seems to be like a "release" for me, and the pain lessens a bit. So I usually just jump in bed to go to sleep.

No tablets work for me and I don't get to eat the entire day. I went to the doctors and he prescibed me various different tablets that didn't work. I then went on The Pill and that helped, but I try not to take them every month and just choose to deal with the first day and miss college.

Try and see if the Pill works, if you get these problems every month. Good luck.
yeh i get that too! the extreme nausea as well - last time i hadnt eaten anything and my body was trying to be sick it was that bad. errrm my doc told me that extreme nausea or sickness are often caused by Migraines, which, surprise surprise, r often caused by periods.. and when i took two yellow Migraileve tablets, the headaches, dizziness and nausea/sickness went away, or was at least half as bad.. hope this helps! but yeh see a doc first! xxx

Kaolin and Morphine... get it from the chemists. Treats the pain and stops the sickness.
I sometimes get the whole nausea and feeling dizzy thing, once or twice I have even been sick. I don't get it every time and sometimes its worse than others, I try not to be worried by it as I always feel fine after a day or two but speak to your GP if you are worried.
My period used to make me nauseous almost every time I came on it, and a few times it made me throw up (throwing up was a rare thing - I think it only happened about 3 or 4 times - but I was in agony and very nauseous every time).

I'm afraid to say my periods were like that for 10 years until I had kids. I never found a way to ease them.

But yes, coming on your period can indeed make you sick.

Hey, thanks for all the replies.

It could have just been a sickness coinciding with my period, as others have said. I think that would be ideal! I would hate for this to become a regular thing for me!

I know it's not normal that new symptoms just pop up, but it's happened to me in the past - I once spent about 6 months with unusually bad cramps that had me in tears for 1-2 days a month. Then lately, my periods have randomly started being long-lasting but light instead of my usual 3/4-day thing. It's odd :s-smilie:

Heh so I guess I just get concerned by all the changes. I slept almost nonstop for 2 days straight and I feel a lot better now so I'll just see what happens next time my period rolls around.

Throwback
Morphine? For period pains? Wtf.

Also, morphine from the chemists? WTF?

To the OP, if this is a one-off, it could just be you've got a stomach bug that coincided with your period. The fact you've been having various other irregularities you've now described suggests it might be something worth investigating though - go to your GP and have a chat about ALL the different things that have been happening, and see if they can investigate it.

I used to get so ill on my periods - I literally couldn't stand up for pain, was barely conscious, throwing up all the time, couldn't eat anything - hell! But I went to see my GP and was prescribed some super-super-strong big time pain killers (couldn't go on the pill for other medical reasons) and they're great. Start taking them as soon as I think my period is coming on, and I hardly feel anything!

Seriously, get yourself to a GP and talk about your options, they'll be able to put your mind at rest and give you some help.

I've had the same things happening. I feel so sick that I feel like I might throw up and sometimes do. The pain and weakness is so horrible I cannot stand. I will just lay in bed and cry because it's so bad and I can't fix it. Pain killers helped but not as much as birth control. I have had these things for about two years. I went on birth control for it and it helps a lot. I don't get sick anymore on my first day.
i get sick every time i’m on my period. i’m off food for a good 4 days into it and the sight and smell of food makes me sick. when i was taking the pill i never got this feeling so i went to the gp to start the pill again! and so far so good!
