1 Application to JPMorgan and 1 offer, no need to do any more . It is FO markets - equity derivatives sales.
But generally would advise to do at least 8 apps, at the end of the day at the interview stage it is all about your personality, your enthuasism for your area (implicitly tested through your knowledge) and luck. Unfortunately luck is exogenous so with 8 apps you are bound to be lucky.

Barclays Capital

Bear Stearns

BNP Paribas

Citigroup

Credit Suisse

Deutsche Bank

Dresdner Kleinwort

Goldman Sachs

HSBC CIBM

JPMorgan

Lehman Brothers

Macquarie Bank

Merrill Lynch

Morgan Stanley

OP, any reason for not posting your own success/failures?

My situation is very similar to yours.
Anyway, in my opinion, if they don't reply to you within 3 weeks, they don't reply to you.

Well, I only started submitting applications on October 1st and sent in my last one last weekend. I don't hold out much hope for the earlier ones (especially since alot of them have already started giving first round/assessment centre invites to other applicants.

There's a thread on IBTlk that started off with a great idea of people making a table of who they've applied to, what position and what stage they're at, but it doesn't seem to have worked very well, with people not updating their progression. It was a great idea though.

Not always true. Most of the US based IBs reply after January (LB, GS, ML to name a few). Very few give internship offers before Dec (the ones I know of are BarCap, JPM and DB).

In fact, HSBC and BNPP have made internship offers in April/May! So there you go!

I've applied to about 7 or 8 BBs and only have 1 first round interview so far and 3 rejections(one of those being a failed numeracy test).

I'm applying mainly to technology roles though whereas I imagine most people in here are applying to FO roles.

Hopefully the non-BBs are less competitive.

Nope, this is for the summer internship 08. Works out perfectly so, fingers crossed, I get a '09 offer I can take a much needed gap year.

You guys are working hard - fredstar, you've made 15 intern apps already? I haven't even started :frown:

Incidentally, can anyone say which banks' online apps don't require an online test or take much time to fill out? I'm feeling lazy and would like to do 2/3 non time-consuming apps to get the ball rolling ;-)

Reply 12

From my experience, they all take at least an hour and a half to fill out (even it that means doing just a cover letter)

I think you mean the other guy, only been through one process with JP.
ML Have a pretty simple app where you just register a few details and take a numerical test, if you pass it you are invited to fill in a full application form.

I'd say start with Merrill Lynch - they don't get you to fill in much info before they give you an online numerical (maybe verbal too, can't remember though) test - so you'll know if you've passed/failed before you start doing competency questions and all that time-consuming stuff.

Barclays Capital is also a good place - they give you an instant online test when you submit your application and they tell you if you've passed or failed straight away. If you pass you're practically guaranteed a first round interview.

Can you tell us who you've had your 1st round and your definite rejections from? I've only gotten a first round from Barclays and haven't heard back from anybody else yet. I'm mainly applying to operations.

Great minds and all that...

I would apply to JPM and GS first. Out of all the banks these are the only 2 that have reported quarterly earnings higher than expectations. The rest are all well below and in many of these cases they have already announced limited recruiting this time around as a result. I am guessing that with limited places available those who have already applied are very likely to fill the places. If you prefer to prioritise by which is easier to fill I think your possibly not giving yourself the best chance of getting a job?

15 applications (with 10 to go!)

1 First round interview
2 Telephone interviews

1 Reject due to failed test (idiot)
1 Reject (defo Autofilter)

The rest havn't replied, although I don't know any of my mates that have had a significant number of replies so far. One of my rejections was a definate AutoFilter, with me submitting my application at 7:30pm and the rejection c9:30; its highly unlikely that HR work that late. I don't know what they filtered me out on... probably my university, as I've got pretty good grades across the board.

15 with 10 to go: Rob, you deserve an internship on effort alone! ;-)

I've hopefully got a guaranteed AC/Final Round with Morgan Stanley for F/I S&T coming up soon so I might just see how that goes before applying elsewhere. If I'm lucky, I might end up saving myself a lot of work!

Any specific names, rob325114?

It might be a good idea for people to post which of their applications have been reviewed/offered tests/1st round/2nd round interviews. It'd give people a better idea of their own application progress too.

For example:

Name - Status (Date of Submission), Position

Barclays Capital - Under review after 1st round (Submitted 4th October), Operations

Bear Stearns - Under business review (Submitted 4th October), Operations

BNP Paribas - Under review after online tests (Submitted 5th October), Operations

Citigroup - New Application (Submitted 2nd October), Global Corporate Banking

Credit Suisse - Under review after online tests (Submitted 29th September), Investment Banking

Deutsche Bank - Under review (Submitted 4th October), Operations

Dresdner Kleinwort - Under Consideration (Submitted 4th October), Risk Management

Goldman Sachs - Application Received (12th October), Operations

HSBC CIBM - Application Submitted (16th October), Operations

JPMorgan - Under review after online tests (Submitted 13th October), Operations

Lehman Brothers - New Application (Submitted 4th October), Operations

Merrill Lynch - Under review after online tests (Submitted 6th October), Investment Banking

Morgan Stanley - Can't check status (Submitted 12th October), Operations

UBS - Can't check status (Submitted 12th October)
