Sertraline

I have just been to the doctor and she has taken me off fluoxetine (prozac) 30mg a day because it wasn't working and i felt no 'up' or change in my mood, after around 8 weeks. She has now put me on Sertraline 50mg a day. I can't find much stuff on the internet about this, and whether it's effective, but I was wondering does anyone have any experience with the anti depressant? Thanks.

I'm really sure why she has but you on that drug. It is esentially the same as prozac and therefore you should not respond any different.

She probably should have put you on a different class of dug altogether and tred psychoogical therapies such as CBT.

I've been on it before, for obsessing I was having. I'm not sure I noticed a great difference.

The different SSRIs have slightly different effects in different people, and tbh, I'd rather them than TCAs (and certainly not MAOIs).

well she gave it to me, to help with ptsd, if that helps. :frown:

IIRC, it's indicated well for that.

my mum was given this for high blood pressure and she had a REALLY bad reaction. ended up in bed for 2 weeks unable to move. was VERY scary! i know lots of people will have been fine with sertraline, but from my experience, just be careful!

You might respond to it differently as, was mentioned, even though it is another SSRI, even though I have to say from personal experience that I didn't experience much difference.
You might want to talk to your doctor about a change of medication group or a different therapeutic approach if sertraline isn't going to help

i was prescribed it for severe depression, not PTSD, but i found that it helped a lot, especially at first. my system kind of got used to it after awhile and i kept having more stress (IB2), so i've ended up on 200mg a day, but that helps quite a bit i think, with relatively few side effects. but it's true that the different SSRIs have different results in different people with respect to both efficacy and side effects, so i think its worth giving it a go.

best of luck!

I agree with this but it can take longer than 8 weeks for an effect to be seen so switching to another SSRI may have been a little premature.

Has ur GP referred you to a psychotherapist? as this is often a very effective treatment for PTSD.

I'm a 5th year medic currently on placement in psychiatry and although psychotherapy may seem a "wishy washy" way out i've seen patients who have responded to therapy very well.

Either way i'm glad you can go to your gp and talk about this.
