A level resit

Can students who are sitting an old spec AS exam retake their paper the following year (would the AS paper be available next year).
Yes you can retake if you're on the old spec, only once though as the last paper will be in 2018.

so that means that the year 13's on the old spec can't retake their A2 paper the following year (if they wanted to).
They can do that too, if you're on the old spec all exams for that spec will finalise in 2018. Those who retake the AS paper/s will have to do it alongside their A2 paper/s
Ooooh, I know what you're on about. I have got it completely wrong, A2's for the old spec will finish in 2019.

Edit: I'm sorry I have no idea which exam board you're on but if for example you're taking old spec OCR maths they state "The final assessment opportunity these qualifications (3890-3892, 7890-7892) will be summer 2018. Resits will be available in summer 2019."

This is likewise for other examinations on the old spec too.

Have you got a source for that? To actually do the course (as in learn etc) you would be sitting the exams for AS this year and A2 in 2018, but I have been led to believe that there are papers (called legacy papers?) that exist after the new spec comes in, purely for the sake of those retaking.

No official source that says it for all but I'm sure if you go to your subject on any exam board website it will state the same thing.

how do you know that they end in 2019 and not 2018

Because on the subject specification it states it. I've found a link that explains it in more detail for OCR: http://www.ocr.org.uk/administration/support-and-tools/siu/legacy-resit-arrangements-040516/

Other exam boards will follow the same guidelines and will have similar content on their websites.

That's interesting. I thought that papers would run for a few years afterwards, not just the one. And only in exceptional circumstances, too.
I had a look at Edexcel, and they're not very forthcoming (at least, I can't make sense of what I'm looking at ) but I don't see why it wouldn't be the same/similar.

It's good to have found out though. Thank you

I've found links for Edexcel and AQA if they help at all!

https://qualifications.pearson.com/content/dam/pdf/A%20Level/Reforms/Edexcel-resits-schedule.pdf

http://www.aqa.org.uk/about-us/what-we-do/policy/gcse-and-a-level-changes/re-sits

From what I can tell it all seems to follow the same system. I'm pretty sure that last chance for A2 resit is 2019.

You're welcome

See, you found those so much quicker than I did...not that I can claim to completely understand the pdf, but its better than what I found before
Here's to hoping that I don't need to resit at all!

Conversations on the internet can nicely, it isn't a myth
Makes a person wonder how so many threads dissolve into chaos and baseless arguments...
