Nicky Hayden, the 2006 Moto GP champion passed away today at the age of 35 after sustaining serious brain injuries from a hit and run in italy on his push bike.

Now a lot of people may not have heard of heard of him but tonnes of people in the motorsport community paid their respects to him.

Now what was so special about him you may ask, well here's your answer:

Nicky Hayden, aka the Kentucky Kid, started his Moto GP career in 2003 on the back of him becoming the youngest ever AMA (american superbike) champion. During this season he was the teamate of a certain Valentino Rossi in Repsol honda and ended his rookie season in 5th place as the highest rookie.

His 2004 season was a disappointment but he managed to bounce back in 2005 and scored his maiden win at home in Laguna Seca and was 3rd behind Valentino Rossi and Marco Melandri.

2006 season was his best season / breakthrough season as this was the year he finally won the Moto GP championship in an inferior bike against a dominant Valentino Rossi and Yamaha (Rossi having won 5 straight Moto GP championships). The championship went down to the final race and he ended up winning the championship after Rossi crashed on the 5th lap.

Despite Hayden winning the championship, it was obvious that Repsol were backing their new protege, Dani Pedrosa, a lot more during his title winning year and the 2 years afterwards.

Due to this, he joined a Ducati team which was on the decline to be partners with Casey Stoner. As has been the case since 2007, all ducati bikes were brutal for riders and only Casey Stoner was able to extract the most performance. From 2009-2013, Hayden struggled, as did most riders, on the Ducati and only scored a best result of 14th place.

After the 2013 season, Hayden returned to Honda, albeit with a customer bike for 2 seasons. Yet again, this was a failure and he subsequently returned to world superbikes.

For 2016 and 2017, Hayden raced for the main Honda Superbike outfit Ten Kate Honda (Red Bull Honda WSBK teams). In the 2016 season, he was able to score his maiden world superbike win in Malaysia and score 3 podiums in Nederlands, USA and Germany and finished the season in 5th place.

Sadly Hayden was killed shortly after the italian race in Misano.

Hayden was generally seen as a good bloke amongst the motorsport community who managed to overcome adversity in 2006 and break Rossi's stranglehold on the Moto GP championship.

Sad news. Former World Champion and a class act. What he did in 2006 was amazing and I was so happy when he became champion. Life truly is unfair.
Take it easy Nicky, I know you are up there. Racing with legends.
